MacBook shuts down at 70 percentage battery

Hi I have a Mid 2012 15” MacBook Pro retina A1398

Checked battery health in system information: 100 cycles of maximum 1000 for my model, condition normal but what could it be if not the battery?

Mac literally refused to turn on without charger plugged in even with 70% left energy!

Coconutbattery : normal

Background situation :

I reinstalled mojave 10.14.6 because didn’t remember the password to device I didn’t use for 4-5 years.

I started using chrome and after an hour of use mac turned off when I was choosing a file path.

In 2018 It used to turn off while booting up, after start up or when heating up,not even overheating. In 2018 I thought my GPU melted/broke because of heat and bought a new Mac.

But yesterday I decided to revive  old mac and now I don’t think it’s only the temperature crushing my MacBook.

It’s might be also file error maybe because of some problem in SSD or it might also be the battery because when I tried to turn on Mac,there was no response, but when i plugged charger in,my mac started up like an old car, only after third try.

Update (04/30/23)

If apps are lying like @bluechipmike case MacBook shuts down randomly with still battery charge left.

Can I replace battery in the Apple store even if the AppleCare is gone long time ago, I mean, can pay them like in off-brand Apple services?

Es esta una buena pregunta?

Let’s first see if resetting SMC fixes your problem, here we’ll do the deeper method. Follow the first four Steps disconnecting the battery in this guide Reemplazo de Batería de MacBook Pro 15" con Pantalla de Retina Mediados de 2012.

Make sure the battery is fully charged before starting.

Now with the battery disconnected and nothing else connected, press and hold the power button for a boot 15secs to fully discharge the logic board. Now plug in the battery the system should spontaneously restart, let it fully boot up and the do a proper shutdown.

Now run the system down then recharge the battery. Use CoconutBattery to help you gage the discharge. Ideally you want to get at or below 10%. Basically, we are calibrating the battery.

That should fix things if the battery still has some life in it. Sadly, cycles are not the only thing that matters! Age is also a killer. If your case this battery is now over four years old which puts it over the hill by age.

As far as your follow up question: Apple no longer services this series as you can see here Obtaining service for your Apple product after an expired warranty

iFixit offers a replacement battery which you can put in your self, if after reviewing the guide I pointed you to you would prefer having some one local to install it seek out someone who has Mac experience.
