M1 Max MacBook Pro not powering on or charging

On previous days my MacBook was crashing when closing the lid, kernel panicking with the error message "SOCD report detected: (Ap watchdog expired)"

I did some research about that code and it seemed to be about having external drives plugged in but I didn't have any external drives plugged in

It got worse over the span of a week until yesterday that the machine just completely died

No magsafe light, no power (power button press for 5, 10, 15 and 30 seconds even and no life, not even the trackpad clicking)

Decided to leave it with the lid closed for an hour and came back and the machine did boot, I thought it was a software issue and I decided to re install macOS to see if that helps

now the machine is absolutely useless, no boot and If I do the same of waiting an hour with the lid close I do get and Apple logo then a black screen with mouse clicking and then absolutely dead

What could it be?
Should I just take it to the Apple Store and not try anything else gladly I have apple care but if I can try anything before taking it apart would be appreciated

Hi Jesus,

@flannelist and I have tried looking into this error in the past and came up empty, other than the small fragments of information you already mentioned.

You've already taken the most promising step of reinstalling the OS, so at this point you don't want to do anything else that would give Apple a reason to refuse service. Since you have Apple Care, you should take advantage of it and have them take a look at it, since we don't have a clear direction on what causes that error or what it takes to fix it.

The fact that it’s when the lid is closing is not unusual. Sleep/wake type panics are super common (amongst panics). I will probably go down a rabbit hole about this later armed with that extra information because I can’t let well enough alone. Sounds like hardware though. Or firmware.

But I think you’re probably on the right track to take it to Apple if it’s got Apple Care on it. Anything else at this will likely require opening the Mac, or another Mac + the right cables to try DFU related fixes.
