Console plays some games, blacks out in others

My Nintendo 64 console will play smash brothers just fine but when I try to play Mario kart it goes black at the select course. Works fine on my brothers console. This is the third time I’ve tried to buy the game and each one behaves the exact same way. Any idea what’s wrong with the console?
