Screen slowly turns black from the bottom up, like pixels dying

Heya, this has only just started happening, but the longer I use it for, the more rows of pixels "die" from the bottom up.

It will go away if I shut down and close it for a good day or two

@joshiey could be your GPU or your LCD display. Connect an external display and see if that shows similar issues. If it does not, it is your LCD display that is failing.

Hi @joshiey,

You said ".... close it for a good day or two" so assuming you mean the lid, it may also be the video cable between the motherboard and the lid is damaged where it passes through the hinge perhaps.

If the problem is not there then try slowly moving the lid back and forth to see if you can make it happen or vise versa, if it is there try slowly moving the lid back and forth and see if it disappears.

@jayeff just tried it now and nothing happened

@oldturkey03 the external displays are fine. Any clue on how to fix the screen?

@joshiey

What is the full model number of the laptop?

This is so the correct replacement screen can be found.

@jayeff it's an ASUS TUF F15 FXF16PC

Hi @joshiey

Did you mean an ASUS TUF F15 FX516PC?

If so here's a video that shows how to replace the screen in an FX516P series laptop.

Getting the correct LCD panel may involve a bit of wait time.

By that I mean it may be prudent to remove the existing panel first and look for the Asus part number on the back of the panel and then search online using that number to find suppliers. At least you know that you're getting the correct one.

Saying this because as can be seen by this link (type FX516PC in their search box) there are 4 options available. Looking at each of them, they seem to have all the same specifications so they may be all the same, I don't know. Maybe I'm just being over cautious.

Heya @jayeff

I took the backplate off the laptop and made sure all the connections were proper and upon booting it back up, it was perfectly fine. Plugged it back into my dock, then it started happening again. So through the power of elimination, I have found that it's the USB C power delivery that's causing it. Any recommendations?

@joshiey

What's the make and model number of the docking station?

How it is connected to the laptop -only USB-C or other cables/ports as well?

You will need to eliminate where the problem stems from - laptop, cables or docking station.

That's what I'd try but never had a docking station so ....

@giansteven sounds like a failing display. Replace the screen and re-evaluate.
