Why is my phone screen black after I got a bit of water in it?

I was showering and I decided to play some music. Then I left the phone on the sink but I picked it up when I was showering because I didn't like the song. Dropped the showerhead and the water flung at my phone. Went into speaker and charger port. After, it wouldn't let me charge my phone. No problem. But after a couple of hours, 3 or so, my phone started getting this green dim on black backgrounds and it had black/white flickering lines throughout. Then finally, this green gradient blob thing appeared on my screen and everything was dark, so I power off my phone and when I turn it back on, I can hear the vibrations meaning the phone is probably on but everything is BLACK! Help. I need the phone, tomorrow is school & if I don't get the phone I'm doomed!!

Hi @jasmineluo

All iPhone 12 models have an IP68 waterproof rating so it should have survived getting wet. Of course this is when they left the factory and not perhaps after normal user handling over a period of time e.g. accidental drops etc.

Here's an image that shows how to check if water has entered the phone or not.

If it appears that water may have entered the phone or even not, then the impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion starts immediately and is ongoing until it is completely cleaned away

First do not try to charge or to turn on your phone and then remove the battery as soon as possible from the phone to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available at electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. If possible do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain additives which may leave conductive residues and is not as effective. If you do have to use it check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the percentage of IPA the better

Here is a link that describes the process. Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board. Remove the shields that may be covering some components as the water may have got in under there. The ends of any flex cables and their connectors need to be cleaned as well

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

Here is the ifixit iPhone 12 mini guide that may help.

If this process seems too daunting, take your phone to a reputable, professional phone repair service, experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

Thanks for your help, but I cannot turn my phone off or even on. Everything is literally BLACK! I get notifications and such but I can't see nothing.

@jasmineluo If you have Siri enabled and if you are on iOS 16 you can ask Siri to turn off your iPhone.

@jayeff I can't see any red in my sim card area, instead it's green. Is that a bad sign or good?

@jasmineluo Are you sure you are looking at the liquid indicator? They normally should be white unless they get exposed to liquids.

Hi @jasmineluo,

As @thequacker has said they're normally white or they could be silver but in any case if they're not then I would suspect them anyway and treat it as though liquid has entered simply due to the problems that you're experiencing after the phone came into contact with water.

Better to be safe and get it checked out than to leave it and possibly lose the whole phone if left unattended to and continuing to try charging, turning on etc in the hope that it may come good.
