How to fix Pixel 5’s fingerprint scanner

My Google Pixel 5 no longer works properly, and the fingerprint scanner isn’t working well. Yes, I will repair the phone completely, but how do I fix the fingerprint scanner?

Hmm, not sure how to address you; are you Christian, or one of the Purple Laser Gang? :)

Anyway, the great thing about the Pixel fingerprint reader is that unlike Apple, Google has actually made it possible for you to replace it yourself. It's a bit of a complicated repair, but only because it's basically underneath a bunch of stuff so you end up having to take out the battery and motherboard to get to it. Once you get there, you just have to peel up the adhesive holding it on and you're all set.

Sorry to say, iFixit doesn't have a guide for that repair, but there's a Spanish site called Nadie Me Llama Gallina that does. Just use the Chrome browser to translate for you if you don't happen to speak Spanish and you'll be fine.

The replacement part comes in two colors to match your case; "Just Black", or "Sorta Sage", so you'll want to order the appropriate one. It can be found online in all the usual spots including eBay, Amazon and AliExpress. It appears to be fairly inexpensive; here's one of the first ones to come up on a cursory search (green, that is).

The final step is that you'll need to calibrate the fingerprint reader in order for it to work. Google makes the procedure available online.

In some instances people have had issues with the calibration procedure, and may need to download additional drivers in Windows. The whole subject is discussed in this thread.

Prior to going to the somewhat difficult procedure of replacing the sensor, have you tried some of the online suggestions for getting the apparently somewhat finicky fingerprint sensor on the Pixel 5 to work? Some of the suggestions I saw included things like tapping the sensor when recording your fingerprint, cleaning the sensor, recording the same finger multiple times, using different finger positions when recording, and even putting a piece of clear tape over the sensor. Here's a Reddit thread on people having sensor issues with their Pixel 5s.

@Christian's Purple Laser Gang No problem, my friend. I started with a 2 XL and now I'm on the 6 Pro, so I have a soft spot for Pixels. You know where to find us when you get into the other issues with your phone.

I kept getting the popup box to connect but the connect button was greyed out. Took me a few tries before I realized I actually needed to click on the name of the phone in the window to tell it which device I actually wanted. Connect button went dark and the rest of the process worked fine. oops.
