Does sata2 SSD drive work on Macbook Pro 3.1 (Santa Rosa, Late 2007, Core 2 Duo 2.2 Ghz)? This MBP has SATA 1 connector but are SATA2 SSD drives backwards compatible with this computer without problems?

Yes it will work. Sometimes you will need to jumper down the drive to 1.5 for it to work. This is especially true on the newer faster SATA 3 drives. Do a search for the model number of your drive and "jumpers" for the specs on which pins need to jumpered for different speeds.
