What do the Black Coax cables do?

While repairing my Pixel 4 XL I damaged the connector on the bottom black coax.

I had to perform a complete screen and mid chassis replacement which meant removing all the small circuit boards that were glued into the mid frame.

All of this went well but when it came to reconnecting the bottom black coax I misaligned the connector and must have crushed the tube that accepts the centre pin.

If you have a Pixel 4XL open and face down so that you can see the battery on the left hand side. This cable connects from the mother board to a support and then to a small printed wiring assembly in the bottom left corner of the phone. This assembly is held in by glue and a small screw at a diagonal into the midframe.

What I would like to know is what does my phone lose by not having it connected?

kind regards

Ruth

Hi @newtsoup ,

The coax lead is an antenna that is used for WiFi and BT.

Check if the WiFi detects/connects to your home network or any other WiFi network.

If it doesn't work, to prove that the antenna is the problem try using the phone as close as possible next to the WiFi router i.e. <20cm and see if it works OK then. An antenna is used to maximize the amount of signal i.e. strength, received by the phone

Here's the ifixit Google Pixel 4 XL guides that may help.

@jayeff Thank you, yes it is indeed the antenna, step 31 of the charging port replacement guide mentions it and shows it in detail. Thank you very much. I have ordered a broken phone of Marketplace to use as a donor. This antenna is kind of important. Had it been the hand gestures sensor I could have lived without that. But it needs it's BT and WiFi.

You might find that by watching this teardown video

Thank you, I did watch that before posting. The video makes no mention of the bottom coax or what it connects to. It covers the simpler stuff such as battery, camera and motherboard replacement. While helpful for initial disassembly it's short of a complete descriptive teardown.

@newtsoup Ill look for a better one for you then, I was thinking wifi or bluetooth until I watched it then thought you might mean the hand gesture critter. Give seen more detailed teardown elsewhere... hang on a mo. No need, @jayeff. Is correct, your photo clinches it.
