I will also need to know what device to use when I get the hard drive out, to transfer the data. I'm imagining something like a "card reader" but that doesn't seem realistic.

Here's how to remove the SSD in the Microsoft Surface Pro 8:

  1. Shut down the computer
  2. Open the rear SIM/SSD compartment under the kickstand
  3. Remove the T3 Torx screw holding in the SSD.
  4. Use a spudger or flathead screwdriver to lift up the SSD enclosure slightly
  5. Wiggle the SSD enclosure back and forth until it is free from its connector
  6. Carefully pry the thin metal from each side of the enclosure and remove the SSD.
  7. Use a PCIe NVME drive enclosure (like this one) on another Windows computer to access the data from the Microsoft Surface Pro 8.

  1. Fully power down the device, and disconnect any external power (charger)
  2. Open the kickstand, and locate the cover. Using a SIM ejector tool (or an unbent small paperclip), insert it into the hole and apply light pressure until the cover pops open.
  3. With a Torx (T3) screwdriver, unscrew the SSD's retention screw.
  4. Lift the SSD up gently, about 15-30 degrees, then pull it out towards you.
  5. You may now send the drive to a reputable data recovery service, or attempt it yourself by using another PC in a compatible M.2 slot it has free, or by using an M.2 PCIe NVME enclosure.

You use a paperclip to pop the lower left back panel (under the fold out kick stand) to remove the RSSD.

Just make sure the thing is off and not connected to power first.....
