Can I recover my old files from my spilled on Mac?

I spilled on my MacBook recently and it will not turn back on. Luckily it was insured so I ended up buying a new one. However, I never backed up my old computer. Is it simple to transfer music, pics, files, etc. from my old Mac to my new one? Can I do this myself, or should I let the professionals do it?

If your old hard drive is still working you can install it in an external USB hard drive enclosure and transfer your data to your internal MacBook drive via the migration software located in ->Applications->Utilities folder.

Get an external SATA hard drive enclosure and put your old drive in it. USB is fine but firewire would be better. Go to applications - utilites - migration assistant and pick "transfer from an external hard drive or other backup. You can move just user data or setting or applications or all of them.

I have found a real good option for moving data from a dead Mac to a new one is OWC's Newer Technology USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter. You plug in your drive to it, be it SATA or IDE, 5.25 or 3.5, or 2.5 inch drives and attach it via USB. Real inexpensive, but works great.

Thats the link to it. Great option for $29.

Then migrate the data as discussed by the other two techs.

Does the hard drive actually work? If it is damaged you will need to recover files via tools such as data rescue. However if it mounts fine and is not damaged then either use an adapter or enclosure as suggested above.

Yes you can! Typically the hard drive data will be recoverable after a spill if it is removed relatively quickly. My daughter recently spilled red wine on her Mac book pro, and I was not able to remove the battery and hard drive until 3 days after.

But when I did, I hooked the hard drive up to my windows 7 laptop via usb, and ran a free download able program called HFSExplorer. I was able to recover ALL of the files on the hard drive easily and copied them onto a USB drive.

Still trying to save the laptop, but at least I was able to get the data!!
