MacBook randomly crashes/shuts down.

One process name in Console > Crash Reports shows up for one date (photoanalysisd), but this happens every day. Shouldn’t there be Crash Reports every time this happens. I’m also not convinced this particular crash is the same kind of crash I’m experiencing daily.

I thought the issue was the battery, so I got the battery replaced but its still happening.

Log for photoanalysisd:

In my system log I will sometimes also get kernel AppleCredentialManager: powerStateWillChangeToGated: SYSTEM WILL SLEEP and then my computer will go to sleep for no reason.

EDIT: I used the terminal command to find out why the last few shutdowns occurred. The last one was around 12:35. Here is a screenshot:

And the codes:

Here’s what @Craig prompted me to enter in the terminal after shutting down:

@Craig suggested searching “panic”

Let’s get a better view of things, install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see Agregar imágenes a una pregunta existente

HI @Dan. I uploaded the image to the original post. Thanks, Dan

@Skye Thompson - Good we know the battery & charging logic is working properly!

What is your SSD drive the original Apple unit or something else? Also, did you try booting up with a external bootable drive to see if that works without any issues.

- de

@Dan - its the original Apple Drive. I can boot an external bootable USB, like Ubuntu, yes. But I didnt use it long enough to see if it crashes. Crashes are random, but usually occur at least after about 20-30 mins. Although I have had some crashes within 5 mins of use. I just had a crash at around 12:35:05 -give or take a few seconds. -- but it didn't show up in the Crash Report in Console

- de

I found this in `system.log ` around the crash time:

https://codepen.io/skyefromtexas/pen/qBX...

EDIT: is there a different log I should be looking at when the crashes happen? Because Crash Reports show nothing.

No, you don’t need to go all the way back to Yosemite. In most cases installing your current OS version should be just fine. The risk is trying to install on top install of cleaning the drive off fully and installing the OS as well as the required updates then installing from the original sources your apps. I recommend you install each one at a time and applying there updates and checking things to make sure you don’t have any issues.

To help you here’s a link to the older macOS’s https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211683... I do recommend first creating a bootable OS installer USB thumb drive. Get a 32GB drive using your Mac rebooting under recovery Command (⌘)-R format the thumb drive with GUID and a journaled file system. Then follow the guide How to create a bootable installer for macOS There are some tools that make this easier but I would need to know which OS you are going with to aim you to them.

Only after you’ve got a working thumb drive and a full backup of your stuff would I alter your current drive.

@Dan, I cleared the Partition (GUID) booted from a 128GB USB, and now have a fresh install. So far so good. No KP's. I think, you hit the nail on the head. I'm going to play around with it, with all OEM apps for about 24 hours and see if I get any kernel panics. If everything works, I'll slowly add certain apps back after that. I will accept this answer.

And I thank you all for helping! Thank you @Craig and @Alisha C

I also had a question about Logic Boards. Would a brand new logic board essentially eliminate kernel panics, if the panic's were hardware based? Also, does anyone know if there is a way to get more than 16gb RAM in my generation machine?

- de

One would need to first figure out if the panic was indeed something within the logic board before going down that path. As far as RAM 16 is your systems limit. You would need to jump to either the new 14” or 16” M1 system to get that. To be honest if you want to stick with your current system I would look at upgrading the SSD to a larger unit so you have more space for virtual RAM.
