Belt squeaking at higher rpms

my 1994 chevy suburban C1500 has an annoying belt squeak. The tensioner seems to be working fine, and I replaced the belt with no change. What could.be the problem?

Hi @brandon_k ,

Don't know the engine but it's not the alternator, water pump, (A/C compressor?) is it?

Not from what I can tell. It has the 5.7L 350 with TBI. The pulleys for all seem steady, no wobbling. Tension seems good, tensioner moves. If I spray a little armor all on it it lessens the squeaking.

@brandon_k the water pump loves to squeal on these just before it gives out. Check on that as well as the bearing of your tensioner.

@oldturkey03 it sounds like a herd of crickets when accelerating, mostly over 1200rpm. Is this consistent with the water pump about to give? It definitely sounds just like belt squeak. I'm fairly new to this engine so I'm not so sure about things. Is that what the water pump would sound like? The tensioner from all appearances is good. Its also fairly new.

@brandon_k it did on mine. It was quiet during idle but if the RPM's went up it started to squeal. I know it's a pain to get to it but try and instead of spraying lube on the belt, spray some on the individual bearings of the accessories i.e. water pump, alternator, steering pump etc.. You'd have to do one at a time to hit the right one. What ever you do, please make sure you stay safe around the belt. I have seen people getting slapped across the face by breaking belts while the engine was running and it ain't pretty.

Take the belt off, and check the pulleys…I am sure either the free pulley or tensioner pulley is squeaking. Replace it.

Check them how? I pulled the belt off and moved each one. Nothing squeaked when I manually moved them, and none had any wiggle to them suggesting faulty bearings or internals.
