Draining problems (not clogged)

When I run my washing machine, it will get hung up when it is time to drain. The machine will have a buzzing sound and the water will not drain. Sometimes I will get a DRN error code. If I reset the machine, sometimes that works and it will drain. Other times I will have to reset it multiple times before it works. Sometimes I can run 10 loads of laundry and it never has an issue.

I took it apart, cleaned the hose, pump looked good. Had a repairman look at it, he also said the pump was good. Any help?

@teamnate your washer model is a MVWB765FW ? Just making sure....

- de

We are having the same issue! We have taken it apart 8 times, nothing is clogging it. Took the pump out and cleaned the filter. Nothing in it. Still have the same problem!!

- de

Has anything resolved this problem? My washer is doing the same. It will not spin leaving the clothes sopping wet at the end of the cycle. I'm trying not to have to replace mine as it is about 6 years old as well. Just wondering if I should keep trying to repair it or just bite the bullet and but a new washing machine?

- de

I can't even figure out how to get at the drain pump to check it!! Can't find any videos or manuals as to exactly how to get at it!😣

- de

I had checked for blockages and checked the pump, everything is OK. The pump would run intermittent, then I tried moving wires while drain cycle and it started to pump the water out. I am trying to see if the connection on the pressure sensor connector at the CCU is the problem or the wire harness on the pressure sensor is the problem. Will try more test.

@teamnate I am somewhat surprised by the action of the repairman. There are issues with the pressure dome obstruction that can cause the DRN error. A technical bulletin on how to check and fix this was published. Check it out and see if that resolves your issue. Of course, you also want to use a Shopvac and blow air through the pump into the drum to clear any obstruction between the tub and the pump. Just in case…

Here is the service bulletin Maytag Top Load Washer DRN Error

Hi @kimberlypachell

Here's the tech sheet for the washer.

Try running the diagnostic tests (see Activating Service Mode on p.2) and check if there are any error codes thrown up.

Before running the diagnostics check for any codes in Fault History and then clear the history before running the diagnostics (see Service Mode Entry - Fault History on p.3

Hi @tammylawyer,

If your model is a Maytag MVWB765FW here's a video that shows how to replace it.

If it is faulty and needs to be replaced, search online for the manufacturer's part number to find suppliers that suit you best

01 - Drain Pump

Sometimes, small objects or articles of clothing can get caught in the drain pump. To determine if anything is blocking the drain pump, remove the drain pump and check the pump for obstructions. If the drain pump is clear of obstructions, but is still noisy during the drain cycle, replace the drain pump.

02 - Clogged Pump or Hose

Sometimes, socks and other small articles of clothing can get into the drain system and clog the pump hose or the pump itself. Remove the hoses from the pump and check for any obstructions.

03 - Drain Hose

First, check the drain hose to determine if it is kinked, twisted, or bent. If the drain hose is bent, straighten it out. In addition, remove the drain hose and check it for obstructions. If the drain hose has any obstructions, try to remove them. If necessary, replace the drain hose.

UPDATE

These are the most likely causes and solutions for a drn error code:

  • Clogs: A blocked drain hose can prevent proper draining. Consult your user manual to determine how to disconnect the drain hose. Look for visible clogs and remove them before reconnecting the hose.
  • Kinks: If the drain hose is kinked, it can limit the flow of water. Gently straighten any apparent kinks. If the hose is damaged as a result of kinking, it needs to be replaced.
  • Incorrect installation: If the drain hose isn’t installed correctly, it won’t drain properly. Check your user manual to confirm that the installation is correct. Make sure the hose doesn’t extend more than 4.5″ into the standpipe and that its end is 36-96 inches above the floor.

I tried all of those. I took it all apart and cleaned out anything (i did not find any obstructions other than one bobby pin near the drain). I checked all the hoses, none were twisted, kinked or blocked.

I thought the bobby pin would be it, so i tried it again. Still would intermittently not drain. The repair guy also checked it all and said pump was fine and hoses were clear. The machine is 6 years old so hoping to not replace it yet.

Did you ever solve the issue? I'm having the exact same problem.

- de

We are going through same issues. Ours is 7 years old. Going to try the service bulletin repair.

I have had the same issue. Does not spin all the water out of laundry. Had it repaired, supposedly was struts. Worked for a while and broke again. Cannot get Maytag to stand behind their product. The supposedly 10 year warranty is a joke. And I see this washer on market place for sale with same issue. Will never buy a Maytag again. And the Maytag repairman???? They don’t have enough to go around. Hmmmmm I was told I would have to find my own repairman!

I am having the very same issue with a 2 year old Maytag top load smart washer. Two service calls later and they still can not figure out the problem. They are recommending a $600 repair. The machine is only $700. It will spin out the water once we lower the water level but the cycle is not completing the cycle.

Unfortunately, it was not able to be fixed. I have found a work around for now but it required me to [adjust the drain hose mid cycle (to drain it) and then it will continue through the rest of the cycle. I am trying to hold off on buying a new one as long as I can but it is a real inconvenience. Seems like it should be a simple fix when juggling the drain hose makes it work. Good luck.

I found that one (orange) of the two wires that power the pump were broken inside of the plug housing. I took out apart and reinstalled the orange and blue wires.

Similar to Eric, we ended up replacing the wiring harness completely ($30 part and an easy do it yourself repair) and the washer is back in working order. Hope you can get your machine repaired as well.
