Inline Mike, not working, filled with gel, anyone seen this?

Hi, the mike on my Bose Qc20i suddenly stopped working (mid sentence.) This was associated with some hissing from left earphone. Checked earphones, no obstruction. Examination of inline mike showed all ports obstructed see photo

. Eventually split open case, which was completely gel filled, including the mike surround (black and moist in photo

) and the mike port. ie no available sound path from filter screen to mike. Any suggestions where this came from, item fairly new and no gel rubbed on outside. Could the gel come from the wiring and have been forced into the inline case. Any repair suggestions? Where can I post photos? Thank you.

There really should be not gel in it but I wonder if some of the insulation that they sometimes use to fill voids, has melted.

Thank you. Wires to the headphones also contain similar material. . It has the consistency and color of silicone dielectric gel. The device was working perfectly until the sudden loss of the microphone and the earphones continue to work, with some static in the left ear. No obvious external heat damage. Will post photos. Thank you.

yup, sure looks like they've used enough of the Gel. Agreed on the dielectric gel part. Time to clean is yup with some isopropyl alcohol and take a look on the PCB to se which component shorted out :-)
