Undamaged screen not on, phone works including digitizer [Updated]

My phone suffered a blow to the back near the middle around where the volume down button is. It left the case slightly bent. I watched the screen dim and then columns of pixels (top to bottom) started shutting down. The phone works, including digitizer. From what I’ve read on here the screen probably needs to be replaced. There may be something less drastic that an expert could fix, but that is not me.

I’m a competent tech and I’ve worked on Apple stuff before, but I also know how troublesome Apple’s frail internal construction and proclivity to gluing everything makes repairs. Am I going to regret trying to fix it myself? Right now I sort of have a phone. If I spend close to a hundred dollars for screen and battery (mine needed replacing anyway) only to find the case is an issue or the teardown is a complete shambles…

Any advice?

Update:

I thought about pictures... but my phone's broken.

[Grrr… I had a detailed description with pictures that disappeared…]

@nobody2 you really won’t know until you try it out. This “then columns of pixels (top to bottom) started shutting down “ would make the display assembly my prime suspect. I’d change that first. While you are working on your phone, you can and should most certainly check out the rest of it. See if the area of the damaged case corresponds with either the logic board or some flex cable. Sometimes pictures are helpful so you may want to consider posting some of the damaged area etc., with your QUESTION. That way we can see what you see and experts like @imicrosoldering may pick up some clues from it. Agregar imágenes a una pregunta existente

I added some pics. I'm really trying to evaluate the most cost effective path considering the implications of the case bend and manner of screen death. I admittedly did crack the screen of the first all-in-one iMac I opened, so a little trigger shy.

@nobody2 Oldturkey is right. You need to rule out the screen first. From what you have described if it is not the screen I wouldn’t waste any more time or money on it as a fading functional screen would mean a major component on the logic board has failed.

That seems to mean an investment that won't benefit me if it fails. I'll ask around at local repair shops that already have the proper parts and tools, but I think I'm going to have to replace it. At least the new SE is out. Thank you @oldturkey03 and @imicrosoldering
