That part is in fact the EMI foam. It is normally adhered to the hard drive in order to minimise vibrations.

Are you sure your iMac is the 2012 model?
I remember this as being part of the iMac Intel 27" EMC 2309 and 2374 cambio de disco duro jump down to Set 15.
