Laptop acts like someone is holding down the 1 key intermittently

I’m looking for some advice on how to approach this problem with my laptop. As the title says, my laptop sometimes acts like someone is sitting there holding down the 1 key. If there is a text box active it’ll type 1’s non-stop, and if not it’ll start to mess with the ability to tap to click things using the track pad. Clicking the keys on the trackpad still works though. I’ve had this problem for a while now, so I’ve started to notice it only really starts up when the computer really starts heating up, like when I’m playing games, but I can watch tv for hours without it acting up.

A little bit of background, I did spill juice on my computer at one point, and I immediately turned my computer off and flipped it over. The keys were sticky for a while until I pulled them all off and cleaned them a few times, but there weren’t any other problems for a few months, when this issue with the 1 key started happening. Despite the time delay I’m assuming it’s related since it’s the only damage that’s happened to this computer.

Since this problem has been happening for a while, I’ve tried a few things to fix it, unsuccessfully, and I think I might have narrowed down the problem a bit. I originally thought it was just a sticky key so I pulled the key off and cleaned it repeatedly, along with the area directly beneath the key. When that didn’t work I thought it might be a software glitch so I factory reset my computer. That didn’t help so I’m back to thinking it’s hardware. I’ve pulled the back off my computer but didn’t have much luck getting to the other side of the keyboard, there’s a lot of stuff to take apart and I’m worried I might do more harm than good. As it is right now, even if the 1 key problem starts acting up, my laptop can fold backward (into a tablet sort of mode), which disables the keyboard and the 1 key problem along with it so I can use a bluetooth keyboard instead, but it’s a somewhat obnoxious solution.

I’m trying to figure out if I can fix it myself or if I should send it in to be fixed professionally. Ultimately it wouldn’t be too big of a deal if I broke this computer more while trying to fix it since I have a desktop as my main computer now, but I’m not even sure where to begin taking it apart, I couldn’t find anything specific about this model of laptop and I’m not sure how much I’d need to take apart to get to the back of the keyboard where I’m guessing the problem is. If anyone has any ideas or advice that would be fantastic, thanks for reading.

Hi @aquelle ,

It seems as though the liquid spill on the keyboard has finally surfaced as a problem.

It is usually easier to replace the keyboard than to try and fix it. When trying to fix keyboards you can create more problems than what you originally had.

Unfortunately you have to completely disassemble the laptop to get to the keyboard, as it is part of the upper case assembly.

Here’s the hardware mainenance manual for the laptop.

It details all the necessary pre-requisite steps and procedures to remove individual components and disassemble the laptop. You will notice that it doesn’t mention how to do this for the upper case/keyboard assembly. That is because by the time you have done everything else that is all that is left.

On p.61-62 Item #2 you will find all the country specific part numbers for the upper case/ keyboard assembly. If you search online using the part number only, appropriate to your particular model variant you will get results for suppliers of the part. Usually the part number is to be found on the underside of the assembly if you wish to verify that you are ordering the correct one.

If doing all this seems too daunting to do yourself, contact a reputable, professional laptop repair service and ask for a quote.
