Kenmore Elite Refrigerator Model 795.74023.412

My Kenmore Elite Refrigerator stopped cooling so had a repair guy out and he said it was the compressor. Said it would be $1,200 to fix. Compressors are $325 (Part Price) or so but he said the computer board would also need to be replaced. Is this accurate?

Can you give any other symptoms than "it stopped cooling". Did happen all of a sudden. any noises, just anything.

- de

Ice maker quit making ice then we noticed freezer not cooling and then gradually the rest stopped cooling. We did hear a humming sound when doors were shut but when opened the noise would stop .

- de

I had the same situation, changed the compressor and nothing happened. A second technician said it will probably be the board panel. The board is about $200. By the way, Sears sells a replacement one that substitute the original.

We has similar symptoms.. Called one company they wouldn't touch it. I called sears and did there multi-appliance warranty/repair and for $130 bucks parts and labor done by a sears tech

@tbennett2020 when you open the doors, the circulation fans stop.

Hi @tbennett2020

The humming noise may be the evaporator fan either operating or trying to operate. It should be operating as long as the compressor is running and the doors are shut. It stops when a door is opened and starts again when it is shut.

Don't confuse this fan with the condenser fan which will run whether the doors are open or shut.

The condenser fan is outside the compartments near the compressor and condenser coils. The evap fan is inside the freezer compartment behind a panel

Can you hear or "feel" if the compressor motor is running?

Price may depend on whether the control board is the reason that the compressor is not working or whether it is just the compressor or both.

How old is the refrigerator?

Usually there is a 5 year warranty on the "sealed system" which includes the compressor (but not the labour), while the rest of the fridge is only 12 months which would include the control board.

Check the warranty on the fridge to see what it is for your model. It is usually found in the user manual

Update (03/24/2020)

Hi @tbennett2020

I find it surprising that both the control board and the compressor failed at the same time. Maybe if you had power supply problems e.g. surges, outages etc but otherwise very coincidental.

Either one failing only is more likely although the compressor should last for at least the warranty period. With electronics even though they are very reliable and robust these days occasionally they fail early

With regard to the compressor, according to this link (enter “compressor’ in the part name search box) the compressor for your fridge (part #300A in case parts diagram - part #TCA35911902) is not available any more and is no longer manufactured.

When searching online using the part number it turns out that the compressor is an LG compressor which does not bode well that it is no longer manufactured, as there was (is?) a class action lawsuit regarding LG compressors.

There’s more information online regarding the LG compressor problem

If you do have a LG compressor (verify and if so, also get the model number and serial number from the label on the compressor) maybe you could contact LG (see link at bottom of article in the previous link) and ask them if you feel that you might be caught up in this problem. That’s why knowing the model and serial numbers of the compressor might be handy. Just a thought.

It could be that a compressor fault damaged the control board.

If you want to test it out for yourself, here's a link to the service manual for the refrigerator, which should show how to get into the diagnostics to check individual components in the fridge, if the control board is still functioning that far that is.

The downside is that you have to purchase it.

Compressor is not running at all. Refrigerator was bought August 2016. I’ll have to double check the warranty. I’m sure the maintenance guy meant the control board and compressor would need to be replaced

That compressor may not be manufactured any longer but you can still find it on eBay in new condition. I just replaced one last week. There are many parts supply houses that have plenty in stock. When a part is no longer made, the part price goes up considerably. I used to pay around $180 now they cost $300 -$499. There are many part stores that buy parts in large quantities at a cheaper price. Warehouses all over will have them for awhile until they sell out. I have had to order a board and compressor many time. If the board has an issue with the voltage to the compressor, it can cause the compressor to fail, or visa versa. Only the technician that diagnosed it can explain why both are needed.

@tbennett2020 your Kenmore Elite manufactured by LG has a 10 year warranty on the sealed system parts only. The parts are cover by Sears but not the labor. Since your refrigerator has the Kenmore name, LG has no responsibility. Sears is responsible for the warranty. This also means that you don’t qualify for the Class Action Suit against LG. All Kenmore “Elite” appliances have a longer warranty. The refrigerators have 10 yrs on sealed system, the Elite washer have 10 yrs on transmission etc... Your warranty is explained in your owners manual on the last page, I believe. Contact Sears to have it repaired through the warranty. If they can’t locate the part then they must offer you some options. You paid good money to buy the Elite. The big selling feature of the Elite was the better warranty. Believe me, you paid for that warranty. They MUST honor it or Sears will be fault. It’s the law.

- de

What do you do when Sears won't take responsibility? Sears claims we are located out of their service area so they will not send anyone out to diagnose if it is the compressor that failed? And only a Sears service person can diagnose it to be covered by the warranty.

- de

@jts122 You demand to speak to a supervisor or the escalations department. Tell them the local service technician diagnosed it as a failed compressor and the parts are under warranty through Sears. All Kenmore Elite refrigerators have a 10 year warranty on the sealed system parts only. You have to pay labor. If they can’t service your area, have them ship you the parts and tell them you will have the local refrigerator service tech install the parts. They may want to speak with the tech to confirm they are certified and qualified to do the repairs.

I have to continue on new page

Hi @Lynnwood Bosch

Repost as a new question on ifixit. That way your question will get more attention than it being posted as an "answer" to an existing question.

Your Kenmore is made by LG. The board and the compressor work together. I learned to replace the board when I’d replace the compressor. If I didn’t, I would end up going back within a month or 2 and finding a bad board. Plus, the customer wouldn’t be real happy losing a refrigerator full of food.

On newer refrigerators, there is a tool called a JIG that syncs the new compressor with the original board and you don’t need to replace the board with the Compressor, only sync it.

The $1200 is correct

I had the compressor replaced for $850. The new part cost about $400, and the rest was for the drier and labor. Most repair companies refused to service the refrigerator I got lucky with an independent repair guy who said he always keeps a compressor on his truck for this model as he replaced them regularly.

This refrigerator has an “inverter” compressor that makes it energy efficient. The manufacturer of this refrigerator is LG and they lost a class action lawsuit over the compressor failing.

https://www.consumerreports.org/lawsuits...

However the lawsuit did not cover Kenmore branded LG refrigerators and the class action lawsuit for Kenmore was mysteriously dismissed.

The new compressor is made without the defect The computer needs to be reprogrammed and the welding is complicated because the tubes are extra thin so it’s a pro job.
