Display is acting crazy, what should I change?

A video will say it better :

The display self test and the bios are showing the same mess. So it seems quite sure that it’s coming from the display. What should I change ? The whole display assembly ? Thanks !

Hi

Try connecting an external monitor to the laptop, just to verify that it is not a GPU card problem (if yours has one and is not using integrated graphics). If your particular model uses integrated graphics and the problem is there on the external monitor as well it could be a motherboard problem.

It could also be that the video cable has been damaged where it passes through the left hinge to get to the display panel from the motherboard.

Other than that you’ll have to check the cable connection at the display end and if that is OK it may be the panel itself.

Here’s a link to the service manual for the laptop taken from this webpage.

Scroll to p.27 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove/replace the display assembly.

This is useful as it will allow you to get access to the cable and the connections at both ends.

Connected to an external monitor, it works just fine. Plus I tried the "hold D + start button" on the laptop, that is supposed on Dell laptops to run the BIST test from the display directly (without using the GPU card at all). It displayed a mess also. So I concluded that it's a problem with the display itself. To check the cables on the display end seems to be the next step. I saw the guide you mentioned, yes, it's going to be very useful. Next step I guess is to remove the display assembly and try to open it to check the cables, right ? Anyway, I have nothing to lose, even if it's not easy, I have at least to try.

Hi,

If you take your time, removing the display is just one step at a time.

The cable will just connect into a connector on the back of the display module or maybe even be sealed inside it (not sure regarding your panel) but in any event if the cable is not damaged and the connection (if there is one accessible) is OK then you'll have to replace the panel as repairing display panels is not an option for DIY.

Look on the back of the display panel for a part number.

If there is one there, search online using the part number only in the search term of your browser to get results for suppliers of the part

Good luck with the repair.

To remove the display assembly looks pretty easy indeed. To open the assembly seems much more difficult without the right tools. I will maybe try. I found the parts already, both the assembly, and the panel alone. The price different isn't that big for used parts (something like 30 to 40 US$), so I may go for the assembly directly to avoid the hassle. Thanks for your very quick answers, it's very helpful !

Well, you might need to, but first check that the display cables haven’t come loose.

Yes I did, I opened the cover under the computer, and checked. It seems all good. Pressing and playing with the cables didn't change anything. They are connected to the display panel too, but to open it seems to be much much more difficult. Should I still try? It got worse actually, at first I had only one band acting weird like that. Now it's the whole screen. I'm not too sure if a cable problem would be limited to a band first, then the whole screen.

@François T That probably wouldn't be a cable problem. I've heard of this happening on samsung phones because of the system cache, but this isn't a phone and it's very unlikley that's the problem. There must be something wrong with the display.
