TI graphic calculators have always had failing screens. That why you cannot count on them in the work world.

The cable that connects the display to the board has failed. Unlike the color versions of the TI-84, the display is held onto the calculator with a TAB (Tape automated bonding) connection that cannot be removed non-destructively. You will need a TAB machine, new display (the cable will be damaged upon removal) and a lot of experience to get this right.

In addition, like the TI-84 Plus (also B&W), the board is held in with plastic - these need to be broken and fixed with screws in order to secure the board correctly again. Supposedly TI sells refurb calculators for $100 (they may want the bad one back), but it’s usually cheaper to get one from a high school/college student who only used it for 2-4 years (and took care of it and then forgot about it) or a bookstore who sells used TI calculators.

The TI-84 Plus (the one I own), the SE (yours) and the CSE (discontinued quickly) are all equally as disposable.

If this only happened right after you cleared the history, then it’s not the display, you just need to do a RAM reset. (Take out the backup battery and one of the AAA batteries. Hold down ON for 10 seconds, then put the backup battery back in lastly, put the AAA battery back in.) It may also help to reinstall the OS. Since that’s a more complex procedure I’ll refer you to this video that explains how to do it.

If this has been happening over the course of days or weeks then it’s definitely either display issue or a battery issue. You can try just replacing the batteries but it that doesn’t work then Nick’s answer will help you out.

I'm surprised a history reset can do that. When I cleaned the board on mine (precautionary, but looked harmless) mine did something weird when I cleaned the wrong pad but recovered properly. Lost the RAM contents, but it was fine.

Then again I have a 2015 version, so maybe mine is less susceptible to bugs like this. I also don't think $100 for a refurb from TI is worth it, especially on the B&W TI-84 series. So many of these are out there because of high school kids (and parents) wanting them gone (and to recover something) it's hard to justify $100 for a refurb when I can get a new one for +/- $20 more at retail (or $109 on Amazon) OR get a used one that was babied (due to the price) for 3/4 of the price in most cases. It may not be the same (and if you get a used one, expect a Plus to be the common one available), but the differences between the B&W series are superficial at most.

Sort of unrelated, but how well does the B&W TI-84 (Plus) play with 1.2V 850mAh AAA batteries? Radioshack clearance special I have in my rechargeable battery stock (DJE).

I don't want to deal with another battery leak. One from a former high school student's cheap batteries is the only one I want to deal with.

It *should* act fine with those batteries, I know a TI 83 Plus can handle them fine, you may need to turn up the display contrast a bit though. Just make sure you're using 4 of the same type of battery and you shouldn't have problems. :)

Most devices don't mind the .3V differential, but it has come up from time to time on certain devices. Hopefully the 84 reduces the power draw so it doesn't matter. Mine is fine (to my eyes), but bear in mind I have a 2015 model - YMMV. That or my eyes are better adjusted for low contrast then most if it comes up as a possibility.

I don't mess with alkaline batteries unless I have no choice.
