Using replacement battery kit on phone identified as water damaged

I’m interested in using iFixit’s battery replacement kit for my iPhone 6s. When I took it to Best Buy for the $29 deal last year, they refused to do the service based on the water damage indicator showing pink (I dropped it in the river for a couple of seconds about 1.5 years ago).

I’ve never had any issues stemming from the water damage (that I know of), but my battery could use replacement. My question is whether or not it’s a good idea to use this kit to do it myself. I’ve seen other posts that recommend doing a good cleaning using isopropyl alcohol before battery replacement. Given that I’m completely new to any phone repair, is it worth buying the kit? Any risk of me catching my phone on fire? Battery health maximum capacity is at 83%. Thanks for any advice.

Depends on if you see corrosion e.g white marks inside the phone on any connector or liquid residue behind the screen or board.

Usually it's okay if the sticker just went red but with no signs of liquid inside.

It is worth buying the replacement kit, a battery replacement is fairly cheap and doesn't take long to do while following the iFixit guide.

Thanks for your advice. I assume I will only find the white marks once I actually open up the phone, correct? I'll give it a shot.

Yeah, should be fine. If you see red marks do a quick inspection of the inside of the phone, no need to remove logic board if it looks fairly clean.

Everything went smoothly and no additional corrosion was found inside the phone. Thanks again for your help!

When conducting this repair, ensure that you utilize some heat to loosen the adhesive for the battery. If the battery is punctured during removal, it is highly likely to catch fire. You can utilize 91% alcohol to fight some corrosion and to eat away at the adhesive. Recommend using plastic tools only to lift battery out and add alcohol as you gain space to get through the adhesive. Have fun and use caution. :-)

Thanks Jonathan, I appreciate the additional information about removing the battery. I found a friend who has done a few of these repairs to hold my hand during the process.
