Do you see this with your desktop being displayed? If you do lets get a picture just to be sure we've got it nailed down.

- de

just hooked it up to an external display and no green lines at all

- de

What does your internal displays desktop look like? Clean or smeared with red or green? A picture would help!

So we can tell the display its good. If the display its self was bad you would have also seen the line on the white screen or some color distortion on that location.

What you are seeing is noise likely from corrosion on the connector on the logic board or the cable is slightly damaged so one of the lines is touching chassis (ground).

Dan, thanks so much for the great help. Any ideas on what parts to buy and where to get them?

Mostly it's a matter of inspecting the cable for damage, cleaning and refreshing the connector on the logic board (micro soldering). Focus on that first.

Your problem my friend is almost certainly a bad display panel. There are a couple of ways to tackle this problem but the most efficient and easiest fix for this is to go over to eBay and pick up a decent used display. You'll find a good selection of them too. Plan on spending between $350 and $400 for the display assembly. The time to complete the swap will vary but you'll probably spend about an hour if it's your first time out.

With out seeing a picture it could be just a bad iDP (eDP) cable too

- de

That's pretty rare. LVDS cables don't just fail unless someone’s been in and out of the machine often. This wasn't mentioned by Sandwah, and he has very little knowledge of the inside of that machine. I'm not dismissing your comment, only that I cannot remember the last time I had the problem with the cable alone.

- de

no green streaks after hooking it up to an external monitor, so I assume that means a bad display?

- de

@sandwah - Well thats good! So we know the internal display is the focus. Still can't tell if you have a display issue or just a iDP (eDP) cable issue.

Eric, The iDP (eDP) cable issue is not just the cable its self its also the connectors on the logic board or the display. A loose connector or corrosion are a strong possibility.

Good catch Dan. Taking the extra time to scope that out certainly can't hurt anything.
