iPhone 6 Vcc main Short - Water Damage.

HI everyone and especially @refectio Sir.

I have an iphone 6 water damage for data recovery.

I clean the board and verify with cold spray, the bad part is : u1601 .(SPEAKER AMP, LED DRIVER )

I put out it, on the board, turn phone and recover data.

When i change the this Ic, the short come again.

My purpose only data recovery so i solve it.

I want to know just for general knowledge, which is the reason in this case.

Wihtout IC, short go away , phone turn on but with new ic, short come back and phone doesn’t boot.

I would clarifie if when replacing the codec do you have VCC_main shorts again?

You already got two great suggestions so I’ll summarize my approach and understanding of the circuit seeing as how you want to better understand. It appears the problem is strictly related to the speaker amp circuit so I would do the following:

  • As @aonemob suggests, double check to make sure if VCC_MAIN is shorted after the installation of U1601, you could have a bad replacement IC.
  • As @benjamen50 suggests in his list of capacitors, I would also check the PP1V8_VA_L19_L67 line as that one comes directly from the PMIC. If it is shorted, it could cause issues with the other PMIC outputs and therefore cause boot issues.
  • I would do the same with the P_L19_VBOOST line. That is part of the internal boost regulator circuit. If that line is shorted, it would pull the U1601 internals down and make any replacement appear to be defective.

Check L1604, C1632, C1635, C1695, C1637, C1609, C1630, C1603, C1648, C1642, C1660, C1663, C1600, C1602.

All of these capacitors should not be shorted on ground both sides. For L1604, I’m not too sure as that’s not a capacitor.

C1695, C1635 and C1637 come from PP_BAT_VCC so that could be the problem as they power the IC.
