Keyboard removable from palm rest?

My keyboard broke for this device so I've just bought the keyboard only.

Link to what I bought: HERE

However I am unsure on my purchase since all online repair guides show replacement of keyboards attached to palm rest for this device.

Link to what every video shows: HERE

I just want to know if it is possible to remove the keyboard from the palm rest, and if so, are there any guides / resources for doing so? All I see are the "palm with keyboard" ones. Thanks!

Hi Coby,

Do you mind posting some tips on how you did it? I took my dell 5379 to the local repair shop but he said I need the keyboard with the palmrest! What you post will help others too.

This is the last computer from Dell ..NEVER AGAIN! It is definitely done purposefully. I’m going crazy with first removing all the parts and then finding no way to remove the keyboard. I unintentionally broke a couple of those plastic locks and got scared. Put together everything just to discover that I should have removed all those plastic locks. I will buy some cheap soldering iron tomorrow and melt those locks. Mine is Dell Inspiron 15 5565 laptop though. Just putting it down here so that if anyone has the same computer, would know what to do to replace the stupid keyboard. Shame on Dell for the cheap shot, what a lowlife company :/

Hi Coby,

Take a look at this guide. It might help.

Hi Coby,

Here you find a service manual where the keyboard and palm rest are mentioned (p. 71 forward).

Update (05/31/2018)

Hi Coby,

The keyboard seems to be plastic welded to the body. See here.

If there is still guarantee on it, I would bring it back to the seller.

If not, I would carefully remove the black plastic cover of the keyboard. You might then see all the plastic welded dots that hold the keyboard to the body. You might be able to work with a soldering iron to soften these dots and to remove the old keyboard. Do not soften or even remove too much of the plastic, since you need every bit for fix the new keyboard accordingly.

My problem is that's as far as all the guides go. They never go to where they remove the keyboard from the palm rest (behind the black cover). It's weird since so many replacement keyboards without the palm rest are sold online. There was mention that the keyboard was "plastic" welded to the palm rest in a post where a guy did remove it but never went into detail

Update: Just installed! Seems like dell purposely made it difficult to do in order to make you pay for both palm rest and keyboard. There was like 30 plastic welds for no reason. Thanks for the help!

Hi Coby, great job! I trust that your experience will now help others, who have the same question and issue, too!

The Keyboard is held into the palm rest with plastic welds.

Follow a disassembly guide for your Dell model until reaching a point where you can comfortably access the keyboard.

The keyboard will be covered in a plastic layer to protect the internals from water. Remove that. Then you will be able to see where the keyboard is plastic welded onto the palm rest. I just used a soldering iron and carefully melted them, avoiding wires / cables. Then I could pull the keyboard off. Basically imagine instead of having screws to hold the keyboard in, they had plastic rods melted to hold it in place.

Thanks arsenalwhite3. Much appreciated.

Thanks. How do you reattach the new keyboard once you melt the welds and remove the old broken one?
