Freezer section thaws then freezes

Freezer section of my fridge will freeze then hours later I will find it thawing out

Then maybe a few hours later everything is frozen again

Update (04/09/2018)

Yes food thawed

I put a coin on a cup of frozen water

The next day it was at the bottom of the cup

Hence the ice melted and the coin sank so I know for sure it thawed

Can the thermistor in the freezer section be randomly send out a false temp or do they just fail completely?

- de

Hi @mexico1 ,

What is the make and model number of the fridge?

Could be that the defrost timer control is faulty.

Usually when thermistors fail, they fail. Unfortunately sometimes not completely, that would be too easy. They may shift their resistance values which can totally confuse as to what is going on. You have to confirm what their "normal" resistance value should be at what temp and then go from that

Sounds like it is going through the defrost cycle. Is the food actually thawing?

Hi @mexico1 ,

According to this parts list for your model, the defrost action is controlled by the defrost limiter thermostat.

There are however 3 temp thermostats / sensors, the first 2 below are involved with the defrost action

1. Defrost limiter thermostat

2. Defrost thermostat

3. Temperature sensor

The first one may be worth looking at as it controls how "warm" the freezer can get during the defrost cycle.

@krista88 ,

What is the make and model number of the fridge?

My first thought on your comment was that it was not defrosting properly as you said that you had to turn it off and make sure all the ice is gone.

If the food has thawed why is there still ice there? It should also have melted and drained away.

8 weeks seems to indicate a build up of ice which is interfering with the normal operation of the fridge. With auto defrost there should be no build up as any ice should have been removed during the defrost cycle which occurs once every 8-12 hours

When you say that you have to turn it off, is the fridge compressor running or is it that there is just power connected to the fridge i.e. the interior light works when you open a door, and you don’t want it to start up again?

Hi @krista88 ,

Unfortunately I cannot find any diagnostic tech sheet for you refrigerator or even a comprehensive parts list which may help to identify possible problem components

It definitely sounds like an auto defrost problem, Possible causes for this in no order of priority are:

faulty defrost heater.

blocked drain pipe from freezer to evaporator pan under the refrigerator.

faulty defrost thermostat (or thermistor)

faulty control board

Sorry that I can't be of more help on this one.

Hi @krista88 ,

Might be easier if you call an authorized LG refrigerator repair service in your location and ask them about call out fees etc and also tell them about the problem and ask about a rough "guesstimate" of what the repair cost may be.

I only suggest an authorized repair service as they should have access to the necessary information about how to test the electronics of the fridge and also the parts if necessary.

Modern refrigerators have diagnostic programs installed which can tell what the problem may be and this reduces the time spent on the repair
