What is the eco friendly way to dispose of my old laptop battery?

I just replaced the battery in my laptop with the guidance and tools from this great site. I do this because I’m ecologically minded and waste drives me crazy. I’m now not sure how or where to dispose of the old battery that I took out of the laptop. Any guidance in this matter would be most appreciated.
