Lens opening/closing seems labored; need cleaning and/or lubrication?

On a Canon A560 I've owned since new, the opening and closing of the lens sounds louder, more labored, than when new. I'm fairly sure the camera hasn't been used enough to be worn out and it has been carefully treated so no dust, dirt or grit should have gotten in to create the problem. Is cleaning and/or lubrication likely the solution and if so, where can I find a procedure for getting into the lens mechanism and what lubricant, if any, is recommended? Any other suggestions would be appreciated too.

Hi,

Just wondering if your batteries are still good enough.

Have you tried a new set of batteries?

Older batteries even though they are fully charged may start to fail 'under load' i.e. their voltage level drops faster. Driving the lens motor requires more power than just taking a picture.

Even rechargeable batteries have a life span.

Also most rechargeables are usually only good for between 500-2000 recharges depending on quality

Good suggestion and I understand and considered that. The noise occurs even when good, new alkaline batteries are installed, and yes, the contacts are clean too. I also have a few other Powershots, and don't get the same noise from them. I believe the old lubricant has gotten oxidized and thus thicker, causing more friction. Typical greases are a blend of oil and a metallic soap and the oil can separate or degrade, at least in other applications and sometimes just from time, not use.
