What kind of connector is this?

Hello,

After my HDD "crashed" i replaced it with a new one. When installing the new windows i found that the laptop was getting seriously hot. It even stopped working as (i think) it was overheating.

After that it only turned on and after a few seconds switches off. I found the fan not running as it was clogged with dust.

Opened the laptop and in the last stage of disconnecting some cables i found one cable loose from a connector, went ahead and disconnected the connector when the second wire broke off.

Can anyone tell me what kind of connector this is?

Hi

It looks like some kind of 2 pin (or is it 3?) Molex male connector probably with an SMD mount on to the motherboard.

Easiest way to fix it is to look around for a compatible wired female connector that fits the motherboard's male connector on old disused( dead -no good any more) equipment and use it. Cut the 'new' connector wires well away from the connector so that you have a female connector with wires of a good length then splice the wires (strip the insulation about 10mm at the end to expose the wire, twist the wires together, solder, heat shrink insulation to cover the joint) from your fan onto the wires to the new connector. Just keep the polarity the same to make sure that the fan runs in the right direction. If there are 3 wires before you totally cut away the old wiring from the old connector observe which wires go where on the old connector and match them to the wires on the same position in the new connector

Thanks for your answer. As far as i can see the wire runs to the LCD screen, so i doubt it has something to do with the fan.

Looked at different youtube movies about dissasembling a Aspire 7551G, some of them have this wire connected and on others the wire isn't there. I wonder what it's function is.

Too bad i can't find any similar equipment with these kind of connectors. I don;t have any scrap laptops on hand.

Hi,

It doesn't have to be a laptop. If it is only a 2 or 3 wire connector they are used in a lot of electronic equipment. Have you got an IT recycling depot or similar nearby or even the rubbish dump? Desktop PCs have all sorts of connectors inside them, fans, video cards etc. You only need a wired female connector luckily not the male Take the picture with you to one of these places and look around.

Oke thanx. Did some phoning around and digging. Found out it's the plug for the microphone. Never used it so i think it won't be missed. Will reassemble the laptop without it connected and see if it works.

Thanks for your answer. Rather strange that there are connectors being used and even google can't find the name. :)
