Seven beeps when turned on, but sometimes starts properly

Hi

I have a Dell Inspiron 15R 5520 Laptop. I'm getting the seven beeps upon turning it on. However, sometimes it turns on and runs normally.

I've replaced the thermal compound and still am experiencing the same problems. I also removed the BIOS battery and reinstalled it.

When it starts normally that I can access the diagnostics, everything comes back fine.

I'm stumped as to what to try next, since I'm not sure what the problem is exactly.

Any suggestions/help? Thanks!

that really sounds like a RAM issue to me ... i would start by reseating the RAM, or if you have a couple extra lying round use them just to test. this might also happen if you use a charger that is of more or not enough wattage ... i believe the 15 R uses a 90W charger.

Thanks for your advice!

I tried reseating the RAM and also tried replacing them with working ones from another laptop. Unfortunately, neither option provided resolution.

I also switched out the 65W charger that it came with for a 90W one, but that didn't change anything.

I find it odd that sometimes it starts up as if nothing is wrong, but other times it won't load at all and goes to the seven beeps.

It is more likely to start up after not being on for a while than if I have it running and attempt to restart or shut down and reboot. But there are times where it's been off for hours and still gives the seven beeps.

When a laptop or computer first powers on, it goes through an initial set of diagnostic tests to make sure everything under the hood is working properly. These tests are called POST (Power On Self Test). When a test fails, the user is notified via POST codes which can be lights or beeps. 7 beeps are used to indicate a CPU Cache test failure. This can be a processor failure or motherboard failure. For this I would suggest you reseat or replace the CPU/motherboard. You can find a replacement part here.
