Unfortunately you cant download your "OS" online, legally that is. I would recommend that you use SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner and just "clone" your old drive into the new one till you are ready to buy your installation disk.

How what? He doesn't need his installation DVD if he's installing a new drive. He can download this software for free just to get the new drive up and running. Right? AM i missing something?
If The PO is asking if he can DOWNLOAD it from the internet, and not PURCHASE it, I would say he wants this done like right NOW, which is why I made those recommendations.
If he's not familiar with "cloning", he'll ask. If that's what you are referring to.
You can also call apple support and ask them if they can supply you with a installer for your macbook. You could also just buy 10.6... you can get it as low as $25 on amazon or $35 direct from Apple.

The OP's computer won't run 10.6--its a PPC unit. You are correct that Apple will sell him the original software for his computer.
