a few weeks ago the microphone port on the front of my gateway desktop top suddenly started malfunctioning so i plugged it in to the back of the computer to make sure it wasn't my headset it is one of the front aduio port.

The front audio failing could be caused by many different things.
Make sure that the volume control is not turned down or muted. Sometimes each port on the computer has its own set of volume controls.
Check the cable that runs from the front panel audio jack to the motherboard and see if it is completely connected. In am unfamiliar with your particular machine and where it should be connected.
Make sure that the jack is not loose. If it is, it has become unseated from the board that holds it in place and may need to be soldered back in place.
