"Battery is not charging" after battery replacement and SMC reset

I've replaced the battery with a new one but I can't get it to charge i only get the "Battery is not charging" error. I've reset the SMC by following this guide https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201295 . On the apple website it mentions that the error is if there is not enough power to run the laptop and charging the battery. I have bought a new charger recently but i've also tried charging with the older one and have the same problem.
