iPhone automatically shuts down once unplugged from charger

Hi there,

My iPhone was working perfectly fine this morning and so I left it to charge while doing my homework. After two hours I unplugged it to check something. I noticed that my juice pack was on (yeah I charge my phone and juice pack together) so I switched it off and my phone's screen just went black. I turned on my juice pack again and switched on my phone. It showed the 'low battery' symbol for a few seconds before showing the Apple logo. When my lock screen appeared, I noticed that my battery appeared to be 88% charged. Again, I turned off my juice pack. The same thing happened. I also tried turning off my phone while it was still charging. Still no change.

When I went to tell my dad about it, instead of showing my lock screen, it told me to connect my phone to iTunes.

So I connected my phone to iTunes and it gave me two options: Update or Restore. First I tried 'Restore'. It failed. I tried it another time and it failed again. Then I tried 'Update'. Also failed. Sometimes it would give poor network as the reason as to why it couldn't work but my network's fine (it was at least three bars).

Some stuff that might be helpful?:

- I dropped my phone on the floor a few days ago. That might have contributed to the problem.

- I use a mophie juice pack.

- Mu aunt's bringing my phone to KL to repair coz she's flying there this week and repair there is way cheaper than it is in Singapore so I will not be able to know the condition of the phone for a week or two.

There are many reasons why your phone could be turning off when unplugged;

The most probable cause could be a dead battery. You should be trying to replace that first.

Then there could be other causes less likely to occur:

- It could be that the drop unseated the battery connector if your phone has been repaired before by someone sloppy who did not put the battery connector screws back.

- It could be that the battery connector got damaged from the drop (or from a previous repair, and the drop moved it). But for that to happen, other damage should be showing on the outside of the phone as this would have to be a very sharp drop.. or a very unfortunate one indeed.

Now why doesn't it restore? First you try a new battery on. If it stops shutting off when disconnecting, then you try to restore. It should be successful. If not, you could have an issue with your Wi-Fi. This is extremely common with the iPhone 4S, even if it is showing a signal. In such a case, restoring your phone will be unsuccessful unless you fix your Wi-Fi issue first.

This is done by heating or replacing the Wi-Fi chip, or repairing the other possible issues on the logic board that cause this. A good fixer should be able to trouble shoot it correctly as it is usually straightforward for someone with experience.
