Repair/Replace USB Charging Port

I (and many others) would like to have a repair guide for the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active G870A for AT&T. There are no teardowns that I can find anywhere. I need to replace the USB Charging Port for this device and I don't believe the process is the same for the other model Galaxy S5 G900A. Your help and consideration would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I just replaced the charging door on my Sprint Galaxy S5 Active, and you do not have to remove the screen. I REPEAT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REMOVE THE SCREEN!!!! I watched a guy on you tube replace his S4 active just by pulling the old one out and then inserting the new one. I used a very small flat head jewelers screw driver to slightly lift up the outer edge housing where the flexible rubber tab of the charging door flap goes into the phone, and simultaneously pulling on it with a pair of needle nose pliers. Pull slowly so you don't tear the rubber and leave the end inside the phone, then you WILL have to remove the screen. Then once it is removed I inserted the rubber end of the new charging door cover with the same small screw driver and just kept slowly pushing it in further and further until the raised end of it snapped in. It took some patience but it was done in a matter of minutes and no seals were compromised. I hope this helps as I have been trying to find out how to do this without removing the screen for a while and no one shows you how.

Thanks much. Worked just as you directed. Slow and steady is the key. A locking hemastatat worked very well. Waiting now on the new replacent.

You are referring to the charging port cover, correct? The original question addressed the replacement of the entire USB charging port. Thanks for your answer though.

Hey Robert, you can try to search some Galaxy S4 Active teardowns for reference. The internal design won't change much since it's the succeeder to Galaxy S4 Active. Good luck!

I appreciate your response, however, the new S5 Active is completely redesigned, including the internals.

robert, did this help you? I am having the problem with my s5 active but can't find any s5 active exclusive instructions on how to replace this item. I purchased the part from EBAY, but NO WHERE do I find any instructions on how to replace this particular part. S4 active is different than S5 I would think so I am worried about following that route.

I have not been able to find a teardown or instructions to repair and or replace the USB charging port. The S5 Active is totally different than the S4 and the S5 non active. I think it's going to be a complicated repair though and probably involves going from the front, removing LCD, and other components just to get access to the charge port. If I find anything, I will post it. Please do the same.

Robert, I think your right. I just asked the same question on here and someone posted the same thing as they posted here. That you need to look for s4 active repair instructions. Different model altogether. I am going to ask in a different forum to see if I get the same response and if I do, I am just going to go for it. Thanks for responding and i will let you know what, if anything, I can come up with.

I spoke with a professional cell repair tech who has over 15 years in cell phone repair. His company won't work on the S5 due to the complexities of design and liability. He said that it involves a front teardown, lcd, and boards to be able to reach and replace the ribbon cable and charging port. He mentioned that they did a couple of S5's and that is why they reached the decision not to repair this model. He also mentioned that the S5 and the S5 Active are very similar for teardown purposes. The biggest difference is the S5 uses a USB 3.0 and the Active is USB 2.0. He mentioned that the volume controls are tricky to reassemble and if a little off, you will have to remove the lcd again to fix. He hates the this engineering design. I do also. Hope this helps.

I just finished a complete tear down on an S5 active and you have to go through !&&* to get to the charging. In the process of repairing a phone that I come to find out was refurbished already the digitizer just crumbled to pieces since heat had been applied to it once already. However as soon as you get to the part in the teardown her on this site where the main board comes out. You have to separate the edge piece that goes all around the main assembly that the main board was attacked to. The one I was working on the edge of the main assembly was green and the trim around it was black. You also separate these two to replace the cover for the charging dock. Once you separate those two pieces you will see two more screw that have to come out. After you remove the screws you have to lift up on a cover that is sealed around the edges with two sided tape. If you don't destroy the two sided tape you can reuse it. If not you will need to find some or cut some to match. After you lift that cover there is another cover that is held by nothing. lift this up to expose the charging dock which also has your buttons for home, back, etc. on the other side. It is a little hard to get the charging dock out but really easy to put the new in. To put it back together just follow the steps in reverse.

The USB closure door on my Samsung Galaxy S5 phone broke off. How do I repair it?

I was unsuccessful replacing the charging port. However, once you remove the screen, there isn't much more to do to remove the charging board from what I can see. There are 2 hidden screws which, in my case, were corroded due to the inadequacy of the "water resistant" feature of the phone. It also caused corrosion on the motherboard and my digitizer shattered trying to replace the daughter board. In my opinion, it would be better to pay the approximately $200 to have someone else replace it or buy a used phone for only slightly more money.

It looks like everything on the internet says the 870F is identical to the 870A, except that it is the non-AT&T European model. It seems that it is entirely a software difference, as the bootloader, kernel, and bloatware are different. However, I don't have an 870F to be able to verify. I will say good luck getting the screen off without breaking it.

The G870A has a single antenna coax connector on the charging port, the G870F has two. Apart from that they're identical.

Realistically, I have bad news for you. The charging port daughter board is the cheapest part of the phone (about $10). However, the replacement requires a total teardown of the phone. I can't tell you what it costs. I would probably add $5-$20 (USD) to the cost of screen replacement. That said, the phone is old enough that it's nearly obsolete and you can pick up a brand new Galaxy S7 for slightly more than the cost of repair. When I tried to replace it myself on my S5 Active, I had a few issues. First, the digitizer broke when I tried to remove it. Second, the screws holding the daughter board where the charging port is located were so corroded that I couldn't remove them. Third, there was additional corrosion which had managed to work its way up to the main board. It may be time to retire the phone. Good luck!
