Thanks. A simple answer to a very frustrating problem. Couldn't find anything in the manual or printer instructions that mentioned this.

Do you have to have both cartridge inside color and black. Or can you leave one cartridge out

por

i just bought a canon pixma mg2522 and mine wont print either i only purchased black ink with it not color . returned it thinking something was wrong with it and the second one wont print either. id like to know the same thing carlyn wants to know. do you have to have both ink cartridges in place to print anything or should it work with just black?

por

I left the empty color cartridges in my Canon printer and just refilled the black tank cartridge. Hold the stop button for ten seconds....don't have a stop button? how about a cancel button? Maybe yours has a yellow triangle button. A computer analyst tries every key to determine its function. Be creative.

If you are out of colored ink:

Hold down the resume/cancel button. The resume/cancel button is the smaller button below the power button, on the right side of the front of the printer. Press for 10 seconds. You can now print in black ink.

If the printer is completely out of ink, you will see the alarm lamp, to the left of the resume/cancel button, flash orange four times to indicate the ink supply is low. You'll need to replace the ink cartridges.

For more information, please refer to this device's troubleshooting page.

Inkjet printers do not have white ink. So printing only in black and white is not possible. The printer mixes the black ink with color in order to produce different gray values. The reason why inkjets and color laser printers cannot print when there is an empty or missing cartridge ia due to the fact that everytime you power up the printer, it will initiate a charging and head cleaning cycle. Running this cycle with an empty or missing ink cartridge would quickly cause irreparable damage to the print head . This is why a printer will not work in this situation. When you press the button for 10 seconds, then it may work for a short time (probably there is a little ink still in the cartridge). If you truly want only black and white printing, and not have to spend money on color inks that you will "never" use, then your best option is a monochromatic laser printer.

Thanks, this is the very first time I've found a satisfying answer to why my printer is still consumming colored ink when printing in gray levels.

por

This is completely bulls**t! The white parts coming out of the printer...is the paper itself!

Then what is gray? - Well that's just tiny dots of black on the white paper, creating an illusion that makes it look like it's gray. However in a microscope, it would look like a pattern of black dots.

Also, if you mix colors of light (lightwaves), you get white, which is why a rainbow can be produced from white light.

However when it comes to colors of pigments/inc, you CAN'T mix them to get white. The colors will simply get darker, because pigments ABSORB light.

por

This is bulshit. The paper is white.

por

Your bubble is very limited. Were you just born? Every other printer I have had or used (dozens over the last 30 years) works fine printing or copying with empty color cartridges. Sometimes I want color, sometimes I don't need it. Sometimes I want it, but if it's out I can make due with b/w - and btw, gray is just less black ink. Some documents don't even need grayscale because it is all black text! I usually change my documents to dark gray to save black ink - works great. I just needed 5 more copies of a handout for a class today and 5 of 30 kids didn't get one because the printer is being stupid.

por

That is actually absolutely wrong. The printer uses the color cartridges to get a more appealing color of black. It creates gray by spraying small dots instead of a continuous area so that you see the white of the paper shine through,

The reason that they won' t print without a color cartridge is a combination of greed and avoiding complaints that the black doesn't look right or another color is missing

It is not possible to print without Colored ink. But you can print a file in black and white color. you need to setup the print setting. If you have question and query related to canon printer technical support call us at Toll Free number 1-888-924-5460

Pressing the cancel button for 10 seconds was the solution

Your answer makes no sense. Since when is black and white color a thing? It's color or black and white. I want to throw this printer through a window right now. NEVER have I seen a printer act this way. I need to print and copy b/w docs right NOW and I can't. And I sure don't have time to call some support line when I need something. And why should I have to wait for color ink when I don't need it RIGHT NOW?!

Find the "ink set" setting on your printer configuration and set that to "black"

Hello

I have a Canon Pixma MX885, I have no print head, it is HS. Also, I would like to know if it is possible to scan to the PC and fax anyway. If yes, how ?

Thank you

Your thermal print head is used to heat and spray ink on paper. It should not prevent you from scanning or faxing. You should be able to scan your document into your 1. printer or 2. a file in your computer and then 3. fax it where ever you want. You may need to find where your operations instructions for the printer are stored. File folder Icon at the bottom left on most Windows systems will lead you to your printer device or simply go online to Cannon , find and download operations instructions for your model.

In case you didn't read, Problem was already solved 5 years ago.

The red "cancel" button was the answer the questioner needed, as it is the button used to remove warnings.

My printer is refusing to do anything until I put in colored ink.

The color cartridge is only required to print white. If you’re printing on white paper, you will be able to get by just fine with a black cartridge and an empty color cartridge.

The trick is in finding a printer setting called “Ink set” and set that from “Both” to “Black”.

”Both” = Mix color and black cartridges to produce grayscale output

”Black” = Only use black cartridge to produce grayscale output

This setting is what your printer uses to determine color mixing strategies for monochromatic/grayscale printing.

Without a color cartridge in use at all, you won’t be able to print a proper white by mixing R + G + B, but if you’re printing on white paper, this doesn’t matter at all.
