LED on charging cord doesn't come on / battery not charging

Plugged charger in to the unit, the LED on the charging cord did not come on and the laptop is not receiving any power.

Went to the Apple store and tried one of their chargers and got the same result. no power to the unit. the salesperson at the store immediately stated that the logic board was the issue.

at $500 for the logic board, the unit is clearly not worth repairing.

If I have eliminated the charger as a possibility, does the mean that it is definately the logic board that is the problem or are there other possibilities

Any help would be appreciated, It seems to me that an $1600 laptop should last more than 4 years and that a charging issue shouldn't cost more that the unit is worth to fix.

thanks

Download this little gem of an app: coconutBattery. See what it tells you is going on. You may also want to reset your SMC. Follow this Apple TN on how to do that: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC).

Let us know what you discover.

Update

While its possible the main logic board is having a problem with the charging FET and/or comparator circuits. It would be wise to make sure the MAgSafe connect block is working correctly. See if it dirty or damaged in any way on both the cord and the system. If you want to take the gamble I would replace the CD-In board unit. Its a bit of work to get to as you'll need to take the logic board out. but in the process you should be able to inspect the FET's if they are burnt. thanks for the response. battery is dead, cannot power the unit to try resetting the SMC

OK, I was hoping you still had some life left in the system.

thanks Dan. I have seen and read the DC-in board replacement fix. I didn't know whether it had a high likelihood of success and I hesitate to throw any money into the unit. the technical side is well within my capability. I have checked and cleaned the contacts, with no success. is the DC-in board a common fix to this issue ?

por

No, it's not a common issue, if the contacts look bad it could explain things. If Apple quoted you $500 I would still fix it if it is not to badly worn. Even if you don't keep it you should be able to sell it for a few more dollars more that you are paying out for it being fixed. Look online to see what yours would fetch before you give up.

thanks for the tip on the "coconutbattery" app, I will definitely use it in the future
