Here's the funny thing about my first experience with a spudger... I have successfully opened laptops and external hard drives with no issue using credit cards and such. My first experience using an official "spudger" yielded a broken tab! I'm definitely NOT convinced I actually "need" it!

A spudger is essentially a really nice tool that plays nice with electronics, guaranteed.

Also, a spudger is an essential life tool, no repair should be started without one!

They're essentially your jack-of-trades for electronics repair.

Note: If a guide says you need something, you need it. Period.

You need a non-conductive tool wood or plastic.

I have been a pro tech since 1980. I am afraid that although people love there spudgers, the true answer is no, you don't "need" this tool. It's extremely handy however and anyone who does a lot of small electronics repairs will want one.

You don't have to buy one. I made my own out of wood!

As long as it is made from insulative material, and has no sharp edges it should be ok.

You don't need a spudger to remove a topcase from an A1181. I don't even own a spudger. They are mostly useful for iPhones, iPads, unibody screen glass removal, etc., but I don't use them at all for day-to-day laptop repair. A good pair of tweezers is far more useful.

To remove the topcase from an A1181, once all the screws are out, pull it up slightly from the back by the screen, then grip the left and right edges at the same time, and shimmy it up and down and side-to-side, applying pressure upwards. Sort of like the motion of a boat rocking back and forth. You can also press upward from inside the empty battery compartment. The main thing is you want to keep the topcase horizontal and avoid lifting any end of it too far upward, because you will bend the metal pieces holding it in, which will make it harder to remove.

Be patient, and after a minute of moving the topcase around as described (while keeping it horizontal) the left and right sides will release.

A tooth pick would do the same thing and you get about 50 in a pack

seems like you can accomplish the same things with an exacto knife and some jewelers screwdrivers (which seem more practical and useful)

Metal objects easily damage the plastic and if the user forgets to remove ALL power including batteries could cause a short and damage the electronics.

also be careful of the internal wiring and electronics
