screen backlight not working on MacBook Pro

One day my screen started flickering then it went black. I thought the lcd / led screen was dead but on further investigation (shining a light through the apple logo) I found that the screen is working fine its the backlight. Now I can not find a clear fix for this. Could I just buy a new screen and all will be well or is it something else I need to look at

thanks

Your system uses LED's for the backlight system. On your main logic board is a driver chip (WLED) which likely blew.

Here's a simular question: Location of the WLED driver.

You may want to also review the IFIXIT teardown for your system: MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2010 Teardown.

Do not forget to check your backlight fuse.

I'm inclined to beleive a transistor has failed, probably all 4. when you tear it down, look for the side of the logic board usually near the edge, should see 4 transistors in a group, take not of any capacitors you see that have a bulging top, as they are blown and need to be replaced. These transistors are high speed switches that when current levels are right switch the balasts on which are where the backlights get the power. It's possible the balasts are bad, it's possible a simple ribbon cable has come loose.

bottom line, look for bulged capacitors first, like a transitor failed and caused a surge which blew the caps. If thats what it is, the fix will cost you about $6 in parts, assuming your willing to desolder and test then transistors (google how to) and solder in new ones. I've fixed half a dozen monitors always the same thing

Thomas - The FET power transistors would have an effect on the powering of the system not the display alone. The clue they are OK is the fact he can 'see' the desktop using a flashlight. So we know only the backlight part of the circuit is bad. Yes, there are other components (resistors & capacitors) that could have failed and even corrosion across the logic board could effect things. From experience the WLED driver has a high tendency to fail which is why we look at it first. BTW - it has a group of FET's internally which likely failed, so you're close on the right answer ;-}

I would like to know if someone was able to fix this issue when it is not the fuse or logic board issue.

Backlight is working on the old broken LCD screen but when you install the new LCD screen it is not working. The vendor has come back to state that it is working in their shop and I have also read on the Internet others are having similar issues.

It would be nice to have this issue resolved for others to learn from.

I bought a new logic board, LCD LVDS cable and a new LCD screen but I STILL dont get light. Im not sure what it is. At this point I think there is a light in the display case seperate from the lcd display that lights up the display and case. Though i know this isnt true
