Lubing The Hinges without disassembly?

I was wondering if there was any way of lubing the hinges on my MacBook. I hear a little creaking here and there and would like to remedy the situation before it worsens. If there is anyway of doing this without any disassembly please provide any ideas. This MacBook has been through lots of trauma and self-repair. Would like to avoid re-opening the machine.

I was looking at my wife's MacBook which is the same model as yours. I think if you have a high quality refined clear lubricant such as 3in1 electric motor lubricant, or a tapping fluid, you can put a drop or two down the hinge. Do one hinge at a time with the computer open and resting on it's side. After the drops of oil, work the screen hinge, the more you use it the more the lube will work in.

Alternatively, if you think light petroleum products are not the answer, perhaps try graphite. I thought about soap, which make a good lubricant, but I would avoid it because it may gum up in the future.

Hope this helps

Thanks 040304. Will give it a try with the 3in1 Lube.

The 3-in-1 motor lubricant is a much heavier oil than needed. I would suggest either regular 3-in-1 or even better, a fine grade sewing machine oil. The thinner it is, the easier it is for the oil to penetrate. But don't use those "penetrating lubricants."

Applying the oil sparingly with a toothpick is better than dropping it from the can. It won't take much oil to work.

Be careful and patient while working the hinge, if the hinge it tight, it's better to allow some time for the oil to penetrate rather than to force the issue. Good luck!

I just used "DuPont Non-Stick Dry-Film Lubricant with Teflon" and it works really well. Evaporates quickly, which feels good not to have extra fluid moving around in there. I did this on an Alienware m17r3.
