Why is my refrigerator not cooling?

We have an LG Fridge that's been with us for about 6 years. It's one of those 3 door fridges with the water dispenser on it. Our freezer compartment broke, and we have not used it since. The refrigerator itself was working about 2 weeks ago. Then we noticed that the fridge is slightly warm—like almost room temperature warm. What can I do to make our fridge cold again? I don't want to spend $100 + for the repairman to come and fix it. Is there a DIY guide that I can do?

our repairman said that somehow sulpher has destroyed the copper tubing. Refrig is less than 2 years old. Had this same thing happen to previous one. Would like to know how this happens?

- de

should mention that we live in dry Arizona ... repairman said they usually only see this in humid climates.

- de

Don't think it's anything to do with cooper tubing sounds like repairman has pull the wool over your eyes. If the copper tubbing had being destroyed then all the refrigerant would have escape and you would have no cooling whatsoever. Had similar problem we nearly throw the dam thing away only got it fixed lg gave me the contact details of agsrefrigeration.co.uk the freezer section had frosted over so little cold air was getting into the refrigerator also the baffle had iced up. Parts were replaced everything working has it should.

- de

In response to Kathy Gibbard. I can tell you what the repairman meant and no he wasn't trying to pull a fast one. Likely your tubes are black from the sulphur. You might ask where the sulphur comes from. You sound like your house has Chinese Drywall just as mine did. This problem occurred from builders using cheap materials from China starting roughly around 2005-2006 and beyond. It eats copper and aluminum like I can't tell you. Aluminum doesn't show the damage as it does with copper. I know that places where there were building booms like SW Florida and Arizona experienced many Chinese Drywall issues. Hire a State certified building inspector and tell them of your suspicions and have the document their finding and you can photo what they find. The cost for me was $125.00 for the building inspector and I ended up using a saddle tap/Schrader valve and recharging my refrigerator with R134a with Stop Leak from my local auto parts store. The fridge lasted another 1.5 years. Good luck to you! You are going to need it!

i have same symptom w/ our LG fridge as described but my repairman said its because we have a refrigerant leak in the sealed system. our home owners warranty doesnt cover leaks (i hear this is a $800 repair). per the manual , the 7-yr manufacturer warranty say's it only applies if we're the original purchaser of fridge and we're not, bought home w/ all appliances this yr. any suggestion?

Condenser Coils are Dirty

If the refrigerator is not cold enough the condenser coils may be dirty. The condenser is like a radiator and must stay clean in order to dissipate the heat which was removed from the inside of the refrigerator. As the coils get dirtier the refrigerator becomes less efficient, which makes it work harder to cool down. If the coils are dirty enough, the unit will never be cold enough and will not be able to cool the inside of the refrigerator to the proper temperature.

Evaporator Fan Motor

If the refrigerator is not cold enough, the evaporator fan motor might have failed. Every refrigerator has a set of coils called and evaporator. The refrigerator may have one or more evaporator fan motor(s) depending on the model and evaporator locations. The evaporator fan motor circulates the cold air from the coils thru the compartment. If there is only one evaporator it is in the freezer side. If the fan is not working, no cold air will get to the refrigerator compartment. The freezer may still get cold.

Condenser Fan Motor

If the refrigerator is not cold enough there might be something caught in the condenser fan motor blade, or the condenser fan motor might be defective. The condenser fan motor draws air over the condenser coils to cool them. The condenser fan motor is located underneath the refrigerator near the back. Pull the refrigerator out from the wall and remove the access panel to access it.

Start Relay

If the refrigerator is not cold enough, the start relay may be defective. The start relay is a small device mounted to the side of the compressor. It provides power to the run winding along with the start winding for a split second at start-up to help get the compressor started. If the start relay is defective the compressor may run intermittently or not at all and the refrigerator will not get cold enough. The start relay should be replaced if defective.

Temperature Control Thermostat

If the refrigerator does not get cold enough the temperature control thermostat might be defective. The thermostat allows power to flow through to the compressor, evaporator fan and condenser fan. If the cooling system fans and compressor are running, but the refrigerator or freezer is not cooling correctly check for an airflow or defrost system problem.

Start Capacitor

If the refrigerator isn't cold enough the compressor might be having difficulty starting. The start capacitor serves as a battery to give the compressor a little boost during start-up. If the start capacitor is burned out the compressor might not be able to start and run as often as it should. Test the start capacitor first with a capacitance meter, they don't fail often. If it's defective, replace it.

Thermistor

If the refrigerator is not cold enough the thermistor might be defective. The thermistor is a sensor which monitors the air temperature. It is connected to the control board. If the thermistor is defective the refrigerator does not cool or may cool continuously.

Temperature Control Board

If the refrigerator is not cold enough the temperature control board might be defective. The temperature control board provides the voltage to the fan motors and compressor. These boards are often misdiagnosed. Check all other components to be certain this is the cause of the problem.

Compressor

If the refrigerator is not cold enough, the compressor might be defective. The compressor is a motor which compresses the refrigerant and circulates the refrigerant through the evaporator and condenser coils. There are several other components which are more likely to be defective if the compressor doesn't work. If the compressor itself is defective a licensed professional will need to replace it.

Main Control Board

If the refrigerator is not cold enough the main control board might be defective. This is not common. Check the defrost system, cooling fans, and cooling controls first.

UPDATE 7/13,19

Thanks to LKT for making us aware of this

class action lawsuit claims there is a “latent defect" with LG linear compressors which causes them to prematurely fail. "Despite its knowledge of the compressor defect, LG sold and continues to sell the LG refrigerators without alerting purchasers to the problem." ... LG declined to elaborate.

If Kompressor runs, Evap fan should be running. Assuming, all fans run smoothly, Kompressor running, but fridge NOT cooling, it is most likely that you have a sealed system issue(s). Possibly, a refrigerant leak. The Kompressor will seem to run endlessly attempting to cool. Test for a leak by using soap spray on cooling coils while Kompressor is running. You may see bubbles where the leak is. Suspicious areas include oily sections on coil or copper tubing, rusty/green areas, or joints/bends. You may also use an electronic leak finder available online. You will need a refill refrigerant and vacuum with Guages, etc. to repair the leak. Only licensed HVAC personnel can buy refrigerants by law. See if you can work out a deal with your local HVAC shop. Tell them all that you have checked including Ohms and voltage tests for all the components responsible for cooling. If you can take the fridge to them it might save you a service call fee. Anyway, start with ALL simple things as enumerated in the article above.

My temp won't set. I have held it down and waited. The power seems to shut off as soon as the doors are closed. Freezer on the bottom, freezer on top. Gen Electric. Frustrated.

- de

The compressor tank is hot..is that normal situation. .other fan working..No cooling

We will never buy LG again. Our 4 year old French door fridge stopped cooling in May 2016. A repair guy came out & was immediately concerned about the enormity of the repair but he worked on it & the fridge cooled again for a week before it quit cooling. The same repair guy came back and said we needed new parts. He ordered the parts and it took over a month to get them. After he replaced the parts the fridge worked for two days. He said at that point we needed a new condenser. That was July 27, 2016 and now it's September 30 and we are still waiting for the condenser which is on back order. LG has given us no support other than lipservice. They make a spit and polish product but don't back it up.

I'm having literally the same issue now. LG Repair man has been out 4 times and frige still is as it was before any repairs.

My repairman isnt going to be too happy. he has had this piece of crap LG french door dual evap nightmare for over a month now. Tried a new evaperator, worked for 2 days then quit again. Tried a new circuit board no good. Compressor good. Lines all good and holding freon. Evap fans good. Will not cool or freeze. $2200 Bucks down the drain. And get this...it's SIX years old, just like all the others on here....makes you wonder, doesn't it?

My Bro in law in another state told me an LG rep told him they are making them to last...six years. That's the life of one. So we're phlocked.

Repairmans at a loss. He sold me a 1979 USA Made Hotpoint no frost for $100 to use while this is getting fixed, it wont win any beauty contests but it works perfectly...38 YEARS OLD!!!

I'm going to buy a Whirlpool bottom freezer (NO french doors) from him. ONE evaperator, NO filter,

and MADE IN USA. No more Korean $hit for US! If you buy Kenmore MAKE SURE you find out who made it! If it's LG or Samsung...RUN,,,dont walk...AWAY. They're Junk and will cost you big bucks sooner than later

GUY; It's probably the evaperator. These LGs are lasting 5-6 years then you're looking at

replacing BOTH evaperator and compressor as they work in unison. In hindsight the best thing to do with

something like this is to junk it and get another one. believe it or not, you're money ahead doing it that way.

LG must have invented the phrase "Throwing Good Money After Bad" because thats EXACTLY what all of us are doing here.

great. we bought lg model lfx25976st at lowes in 09/13 this weekend first time issue. fan is running..compressor is humming but everything is room temp. havent had it looked at yet as this has caught us with no savings to have it looked at. i have pulled it out...opened up the bottom..vacuumed the fan area which was very dusty...hoped that would do the trick but nope... not cooling anything.i thought we bought quality when we forked out about 2 grand for a big fridge. sure looks great..guess i bought window dressing. we will update if we can ever afford for someone to come out to look at it.

- de

Pointgatherer, you have a 1 yr manufacturers warranty that covers parts, labor and service call. You also have 5 yrs, parts only on the sealed system. Call Lowes asap and schedule service.

Dirty coils can cause the compressor to overheat and, eventually the condensor coils will get too hot causing little pin hole leaks.

The main PCB should be on the back of unit above the compressor. There are 3 Phillip screws holding the access panel on. If you can remove that panel carefully while it's still plugged in, look at the PCB for a green light flashing. If so, how many times does it blink before it pauses?

- de

Wow you got 6 years out of that pile of crap? Ours just failed at 4.5 years. Unfortunately didn't buy the five year warranty. LG French door refrigerator, bottom freezer. Replacing which hurts, didn't plan on this. My parents would use a refrigerator for 30+ years then they told us to get the more efficient one, use half the electricity, they didn't tell us we'd be averaging 5 to 10 years replacing the damned things.

- de

Hi all, we have theLG LSXS26386S Linear model. Only about 2.5yrs old :(

Anyway, both fans and compressor are running, although the compressor is not getting warm to the touch which seems odd to me. Also, the fan in the freezer area seems to cut off until i open that door, then it turns on right away. I feel around the vents in the fridge and don't feel any air movement. I vacuumed and blew out the dirty coils already. The fridge and freezer are at room temp, no error codes.

Thanks for any tips..

p.s. @Pointgatherer please tell more about the PCB green light

Gary Yund your right. The sealed system is not typical. LG has 2 evaporators on most French door models. This required more components to be added to the system. With more components there are more things to go wrong. These LGs are very temperamental. Air flow inside and outside is critical. Too much food, a pizza box positioned wrong, opening the freezer drawer wrong can all cause a not cooling situation. By the time you realize it's not cooling 1 or more parts have been damaged. Plus, many parts have been revised and must be replaced even if it's not one of the failed parts. This makes it difficult to diagnose. Most checks are done at the PCB. If the PCB has been revised, the checks might be different with the new PCB making the first diagnosis wrong. A lot of senseless issues with these. I wish the manufacturers would quit trying to try reinvent the wheel.

They deleted my answer as well. Bottom line is you will never get your LG fixed for more than 30 days no matter HOW much time and money you throw at it! Make Sears home warranty (if you have it) give you $500 towards a new unit and get a WHIRLPOOL. No it's not fancy but much simpler and dependable. Trust me throw that good lookin pile of junk OUT and dont look back. Ever.

To Mr Stack who wrote: "Repair finished a week ago & seems to be okay"

Uhhhhhhhh...maybe you better give it a LITTLE more time before you call it good. I went that route TWICE and BOTH times got between 3 and 4 weeks before it started to warm again...Please post back after that time and let us know if it's still cooling? Thanks!

I have a 26 month old LG french door refrigerator model LFXC24726S/02 that has quit cooling. I bought it when I started a remodel so it's only been running about 18 months. Compressor feels like its running and there is no ice buildup. The condenser coils aren't a bit warm so I'm afraid I'm out of freon.

Should be in warranty though. Mayer' answers above helped me ALOT. Might take a look at those. If yours has a 'Smart Diagnosis' feature, you could call LG service dept, and the unit plays some digital audio that their computer hears through your phone mic while your on the phone with them (sounds like an old dial-up modem handshake). Their computer interprets it and tells you what the error code is. That was pretty helpful too. Mine was defrost sensor. I checked it, and the resistance was way too high, so it will get replaced. Also, if your a do-it-your-selfer you might get the service manual off their site. Mine was on there. It's a pretty good manual too. Hope your issue is something simple as mine (course it's not fixed yet)

Still stuck in my brain is that these units shouldn't be failing after only a few years.

I have a side by side with an easy access front door panel that we bought about two years ago. Just after the first year the ice maker started glitching and stopped making ice. Now the thing slowly began to stop cooling. I can hear the fans running, and when I open the freezer door it starts to blow mildly cool air but when I close the door, it stops. The Smart Diagnosis app is useless and no codes have presented on the door panel. From everything I've read, it will cost about $1000 to fix it and may crap out again within a short time. What a disappointment this purchase has been. I will be sure to read reviews before ever purchasing an high cost appliance. Looks like GE has the best ratings so that will be the replacement.

- de

In reply to my above comment.

The repair man took about 5 minutes to diagnose the problem. It was the compressor and it was under warranty but not the labor. It took him about 45 minutes to replace the compressor plus his 45 miles travel one way. That was $320 and now the thing works fine again. The compressor is slightly different so hopefully they made an improvement in it. Two year life? That's really pathetic.

We purchased the LMX25964 by LG and had it delivered 02/01/2011. Last year it got quite noisy at night and we had a repairman look at it. He warned of some Class Action Suits against LG and the Sealed System specifically. We were told to call LG and demand replacement. He suggested you must know and discuss the Sealed System as if it was some hidden response to avoid motherboards and other expensive repairs that wont resolve.

LG offered, reluctantly, to cover the Sealed System under warranty but we would need to pay over 400.00 in labor. We had an extended warranty that expired at the 4-year mark. We decided to deal with the sound and reset the temps slightly higher as per LG's recommendation. That got us -3- months.

As of this past week the ice cream and waffles started to get soft. The ice maker would no longer make ice, even though the reset button worked and showed power. The fridge itself is cool and seems to be working properly. We pulled the backing and very little dust on the coils and fan moving freely. Pulled plug for 30 minutes to "reset" as suggested. The tank is extremely warm to touch. All other components look new with no discoloring or fraying around wires etc. The unit is a great big paperweight that has led the life of luxury and yet failed early.

This was a two thousand dollar investment and last LESS than 6 years. LG was so uncaring and unresponsive that we will never use this brand again. Lets hope their dryer/washer combo lasts a little longer. Poor company with even poorer product line. I wish I could literally dump it on their front lawn.

Wow! you guys got 4, 5, and 6 years!! Got my LG LSXS26326S around 10/2014. went to get some ice cream last night, but was only pudding! as of 1/24/2018 freezer isnt cooling. 3 years?!?! Really? $1500 + tax on special. Now I know why it was on special!

I can fix whatever is wrong. I have gauges, vacuum pump, degrees in electronics and auto tech, but why the f**k is a $1500 refrigerator not working after 3 years?!?!

As another person said, their are 30 year old units still working! I used to do maintenance for an apartment complex, and when the ice makers went bad they had to throw out the whole unit, so I have three spare working friges in the garage. (in case your wondering if they rented it with a 'feature' and it breaks it has to be replaced, or repaired. its the law, and repair is expensive on old units) Anyway, these units are kenmore probably from the 90's STILL WORKING! Just no ice maker LOL!

I feel luckier than others, I could have lost $400 worth of food! Glad I had a place to put it! Was going to sell them for $50! LOL!

One thing I read on here was about packing it full of food. I JUST dressed a deer the day before, and packed all three lower shelves full. Now im wondering if that isnt what set it off.

Oh well. Thanks for this page. I wish I had read it BEFORE I bought an LG !!!

Hopefully someone will read this page, and take it as a cautionary tale!

UPDATE: Called LG today since they didn't call me back in the 24 hrs they said. Said they had no record of me calling on 1/26/18, only the call on 1/27/18 when I was told parts & service was closed. Figured they would call on 1/29/18 (Monday) but they never did, so I called them today 1/30/18.

Spent 42 min on the phone the first time, being told there is no record of my call, re-explaining my problem, and trying to get LG to send me the part. I was told that since I had unplugged the unit, it would take 4-6 hours before they could do the 'Smart Diagnosis' (since they had no record of my call on the 26th! I persisted, never rude but assertive). About 30 mins into the call the rep told me she was going to give me to a supervisor, waited about 7 more minutes, and she came back on the line. She then told me that Quote: "The smart diagnosis system is down right now for upgrades"

/I digress here/

Now I knew this is bullsh*t immediately. I have worked as a tech for the credit bureau, for consumer electronics repair, ran my on computer sales/repair/upgrade business, and alot more experience on the job. NO ONE does elective UPGRADES in the middle of a business day. I remember ENDLESS hours from Friday night to Monday morning when we SLEPT in the office, and drank POTS of coffee over the weekend to do hardware and software upgrades on servers, and workstations!!

/Back on topic/

So I told them I wanted to talk to the supervisor anyway. Five minutes later I was disconnected! I know the brush-off when it happens. I call back. Another 50 minute phone call where I explain everything else AGAIN. And AGAIN wait for a supervisor.

The supervisor tells me the 'Smart Diagnosis' system is up and running, and that QUOTE: "I dont know what the other representative told you, but the Smart Diagnosis system is working". Thank you oh praise Jesus its a MIRACLE!! Its a MIRACLE Praaaise Jesus!! (don't be offended i'm pretty religious, just being smart ;)

So, they tell me that the smart diagnosis tells them that there is NO error code. LOL! great. So I say whatever, give me the part number for the defrost sensor. I'll buy it myself and put it in. well since they say they have NO record of me calling on 1/26, and this time the smart diagnosis throws no code, they cant tell me what part is bad. I ask for the part number for the defrost sensor. The supervisor has to get on the phone with parts and service to get the answer. I get that, she is help desk not a tech. So then she tells me the part number, and its the evap assembly!

REALLY!?!? You mean I have to CUT a SEALED system, EVACUATE a greenhouse gas, WELD copper fittings to replace the evap unit. Oh but wait! there's more! Install two schrader tap valves (which are notorious for leaking) hook up my gauges and vacuum pump, evacuate the system, charge the system with fresh r134a, then test the system!?

SERIOUS? To replace a sensor that clips on to the outside of the coil?!

So I call the parts distributor with the part number I was given by LG. As far as they can see thats the only way you can get the defrost sensor. $260 plus tax and shipping. Yeah, they say thats the only way you can get the part. Order the assembly.

So I say screw this I will just do what I've always done, and take the %#*@ thing apart. I take the panels off in the freezer, and what I found was surprising. I had assumed that the defrost sensor was reading high and keeping the defrost heater on to deice the evap coil, defeating the cooling of the unit. In fact the defrost heater wasn't hot and the evap coil wasn't cold!!! Even after hours of operation.

Now I know a fair amount about refrigerant systems, and if the compressor runs, and has refrigerant it will get cold (assuming no blockage which is rare). %#*@ the computer, it does little more that turn the compressor on and off.

I don't know what I'm going to do, if I tap the system to put gauges on it, it could be compromised, and leaky. I know alot, and have worked on more than a few refrigerant systems, but I'm no appliance tech.

I am really furious with LG for their handling of this situation. I am in survival mode now. fix it, sell it. Buy something decent. I was looking at a Frost King years ago. Didn't have the money then.

Bottom line, everything breaks, but its how long, and how the company handles the situation that makes ALL the difference. I have had LG phones, televisions, and now appliances. Honestly, this is the first REAL problem I have had with their products, but because of the poor handling of this problem, I really don't intend to EVER buy another LG product. It might be great and wonderful, or maybe crap. What I can count on is that if I DO have a problem, it will be a hassle to deal with, and that's not something I want to deal with.

dealing with the same issue with LG fridge not cooling after 4 years. one repairman said it was a block, another said it was the compressor and the third repairman said the compressor works fine, it's probably a leak in the sealed system or i need freon.....Never again with LG...I ultimately got my money back but want to fix this fridge as a back up...any other ideas.....was thinking of getting some freon in and see how long it lasts..

Our fridge seemed to get worse every time a tech touched it. In the end after battling for 4 months, we got everything minus the 100 service fee from lg and bought a samsung door in door at costco and got rid of the lg. Be careful recharging lg fridges. Apparently their bias is different than most manufacturers and you can cripple what remaining life you have on your compressor.

- de

We have the exact same issue with our LG/Kenmor French Door fridge. How did you manage to get your money back? From LG or from the retailer?

How did you get your money back? I've been fighting with this dead fridge for over a month on my Kenmore (made by LG) that was only 2 years old and I spent a lot of money for it.

I bought an LG 30 cubic feet (model LMXS30776S) in late 9/ 2014, it had stop cooling or cold in the fridge around 6/2016. I called LG which referred me to an LG technician. He troubleshoot it and said "it is the compressor failed" .... The compressor is still under warranty but NOT the labor. After 8 weeks of waiting, the compressor came, the Tech replaced it for $450 .... It has been running since then, but now 8/2017, it is not cooling or cold again .... I can hear the compressor running but look like something else to make the refrigerator not cooling or cold.... Reading around the internet, people said LG is NOT making good fridge at all. It just like HYUNDAI car, a lot of problem ...

Guy inSJ, The LGs use a linear compress. They use little freon. The data plate inside the fresh food section will tell you how much. Usually 4.2oz-5.2 oz. over charging is not good, neither is under charging. This problem could be something other than the compressor. Might be the main board.

- de

Thanks Loretta .... I just called an outside Tech this afternoon, he suggested it is the Main board ... It is not under warranty so the cost is ~ $220 from Sears or other places + $80 to put it in ... but he is not guarantee until he does the troubleshooting which he said he can fix but for another $500 - 600 .... It is out of my option for this trouble fridge. I am thinking to buy a GE or a Whirlpool to replace this one so no more headache ... If someone want this still look new LG Fridge, I will give it free (please, pick-up by yourself) ... I am living in San Jose, California ... Please, drop me an email at NhienHLe@aol.com

- de

Hey it's a nice looking box, I'll give it that. Maybe I can use mine for a tool chest in the garage.

- de

Replacing the main board is very easy but if you bought one and put it in yourself and that didn't fix it you would be out that money. There is usually no refunds on boards.

Must be an app or remote device that is activated after warranty expires?

5 years 1 month and refrigerator stopped cooling ,glad we dropped the extra money into the 5 year warranty! Model LFX31945ST manufactured 12/2012

Repair tech came out to our home and advised best to have the unit brought to the repair facility and most likely be around $1300.00 dollars for labor and parts

Very disappointed in our decision to buy this bling product . .$4600.00 not even including warranty upsell. Have moved all our contents to the 22 year old kenmore garage fridge which just keeps humming away. Purchasing a new kitchen aid made in America trump fridge ,hoping to get more than five years as this again is a crapshoot . One thing certain no more lg products in our future.

Our LG is about 5-6 years old. Ice started forming on the floor of the bottom freezer drawer. Our repair guy said it was the evaporation system. LG had a kit that was to help with this issue. He installed it and the next day, both freezer and refrigerator stopped working. After reading all of these comments, I don’t want to put anymore money into this. Already spent $315.00. A while back our repair guy was over to work on a washing machine, but it was beyond repair. He said LG does o.k. with washing machines but not refrigerators. Unfortunately, we already purchased the LG fridge.

It appears from the number of people with the same or similar problems with LG appliances that at least the refrigerators that are the subject of the above complaints are defective, and from the blogs I have seen, it also sounds like all LG appliances are defective junk. Despite this history, retailers operating in America are still selling this junk - and for premium prices. My LG 3-door refrigerator that cost $3,192.00 plus tax and delivery - sold to me separately from an LG stove and an LG dishwasher also purchased at the same time from Home Depot - was less than 6 years old when it completely stopped cooling in late 2017. I believe the warranty on this refrigerator is 1 year for labor and 7 years for most parts, with the compressor having a 10-year warranty. We have had 3-4 visits from an LG-authorized technician who has tinkered with the refrigerator but not yet repaired it and who last ordered 3 parts that all appear to be either tubing or small valves that collectively have taken 2 months to arrive. The 3 parts are now received and sitting on top of the non-working refrigerator waiting for the next tech visit , which is scheduled in yet another week or so. However, the last technician reported to her superiors, as we were told by the repair company that she reflected in her notes (yes, she was a female who appeared to be about 60 years of age), and also told us before she left our house, that the compressor was "locked." The compressor is in fact dead as a door knob--not running at all--yet no one at the LG-authorized repair service can confirm that any effort to repair or replace the compressor will be made at the currently scheduled next repair visit, which means that we will likely complete yet a third month with the LG refrigerator completely down and useless. Neither LG nor Home Depot have provided any responses to calls for help (although a Home Depot employee did say in my last telephone call to Home Depot that he was "very sorry" and that he had called LG and LG had told him they would call us. No from LG has called, but no one else needs to call us. They just need to actually FIX this refrigerator. I am of the opinion after reading these answers that if my refrigerator ever works again, it won't be for long. I am probably going to look into filing suit as I feel entitled to a full recovery, which I feel means a brand new refrigerator of another manufacturer than LG, especially knowing that LG, and more than likely Home Depot, have known about these issues with LG-manufactured or sold products for some time and yet both continue to sell defective merchandise to the unknowing public.

LG Appliance Repair especially their refrigerators, is the worst! Their appliances are built to fail and they often times have to ship their parts from Korea. You'll wait weeks on a part just to have it come in and break again in another 6 weeks and continue that process over. Definitely look into a warranty.

Good Luck!

You'll never meet a happy LG customer. Never.

I have finally given up. I seldom give up… usually I will fight to the end. I have created a Facebook page, I have pleaded with all levels of LG people. It is worthless. I have spent good money and more good money trying to keep the LG working. No chance. We have officially given up. I have a new Frigidaire coming on Friday. And I will be selling the LG for parts if I can’t get it working again. .. likely parts. Hopefully I can get something out of it.

If anyone cares. Please join my Facebook page:

I appreciate reading all the feedback from everyone & was surprised to see the complaints were mostly about LG. We have a French door Whirlpool refrigerator that is only 18 months old & is no longer cooling. The repairman was here yesterday & replaced the control board. Today I checked the temperature on the refrigerator thermometer that we recently purchased & it still reads 52°. I believe the thermometer works fine as the temperature goes down quickly when put it in the freezer, but I will buy another thermometer to see if it reads the same before calling repair again. Thank goodness we bought an extended warranty, but it's only good for 5 years. The point of my message is to let readers know that Whirlpool has a problem, too. We also had a brand new Whirlpool washing machine that had problems so I don't intend to buy any Whirlpool products anymore & am sorry to hear LG is also bad. It looks like the list for new appliances that last is either short or non-existent.

To help anyone diagnose their LG fridge problems, I’ll add my experience which I hope can at least help 1 person.

Fridge: LMXS30776S - French door, with 2 wide drawers

Purchased: Mar 22, 2016

---------------------------------------------------------

Ice Maker replaced: May 11, 2017 (repaired 1 year, 1 month, 20 days after purchase. Requested service Apr21)

^ This was reported just after their 1-year warranty expired, but they were nice enough to cover it under warranty. I recommend if you have ANY problems with your fridge just before the 1-year mark, give them a call (888 376 6825) and have someone come out and take a look.

---------------------------------------------------------

Fridge not cooling: reported problem on Aug 29, 2018 (2 yr, 5 mo, 7 days)

Symptoms: I first noticed our ice cream wasn’t very hard/solid a couple months before it calling in. I finally called after our water bottles didn’t seem that cold. It wasn’t room-temp warm, but just not as cold as before. My thermometer read about 50-54.

I had noticed that one of the fans started making noise but didn’t really pay too much attention to it. After I called, they created a case number and said it would be $125 just to dispatch a service person. Not wanting to pay that fee, I YouTubed/Googled/etc to see if I can find the problem and fix it myself (hence posting back to this thread which helped me). I decided to try and replace one of the fans inside the fridge - basically if you open the doors, it would be about belly-button height, straight ahead (part number: EAU61505014 ranging from ~$79 - $100). I replaced this myself to see if that would help with the cooling. It did fix the noise, but the fridge was still not cooling to spec. I called LG back to request service.

September 14, 2018 - service visit. I explained the problem and after a ~30 min evaluation, the tech said he wasn’t sure why it wasn’t cooling. Fans were blowing OK, temp gun into the vents seemed OK. We talked about the compressor and I asked how often these go bad and when they do, do they go from 100% to 0% or could it be intermittent or even run at 75% or 50%? He said they usually just fail, but given my situation, I thought it was a compressor issue so I asked if he could run the diagnostic app (I read about this online). So he removed the back panel to expose the PC board, and there’s was a green LED that was blinking (6 flashes, pause, repeat). At this point, he commented this is a compressor error code so he decided to replace it. If you’re having the non-cooling issue, first check for dust at the back/bottom. then remove the other panel and check the board. If you see the blinking green LED, it might be your compressor. Even though the compressor has a 7-year warranty, only the part is warrantied and the labor is not - which was a flat rate of $250. it’s a big job and he was here for a couple hours with a blow torch, freon canister, vacuum pump, etc.

So far, so good. We’re out $375 for the compressor and $110 for the fan, but the fridge seems to be back to normal. I wanted to scrap the fridge as I don’t want to have more problems later, but for now, we’ll see how long it’ll go until the next repair.

One thing to note, if your fridge goes down and you lose some/all of your food/condiments/ice cream, LG has a team to help cover food loss due to issues like these. Call this number: 800-243-0000 and they’ll start a claim process. You’ll need to send them a copy of your purchase receipt, so hopefully you have that.

Anyway, long story short, I’m never buying an LG fridge again, but for now, it’s working. Hopefully this can help others and let me know if you have any questions.

October 12, 2018: UPDATE

If you’re planning to file a food loss claim, I’d recommend documenting every step including phone call date/time, who you spoke to, what they said, etc. I can’t tell you how frustrating their team is, but easily the WORST customer support experience I’ve ever had to deal with.

LG and all Korean brands are now using inverter compressors was told this by a tech guy from http://www.agsrefrigeration.co.uk/ and the compressors are failing if the ambient temperature gets too hot they are overheating and shutting down because they cannot cope with the heat.

Quick update: the fridge has been keeping things cold, but it's starting to make that noise as it did when the compressor first went out. It's a humming/buzzing sound. I'm keeping an eye on it and will contact them before the 6 month warranty expires if i feel it's not performing up to par.

So another update... as noted on Nov 23, 2018, the fridge was starting to make noise, but didn't call within the 6 month warranty repair window. I ended up calling about a month after the window, and was able to get manager approval to have someone come out to take a look at no charge.

The tech came out, heard the noise and said it was normal. He looked at the compressor, and apparently one of the rubber feet had popped off so he remounted that and also moved one of the lines away from the wall - as it might have been rattling. The fridge still makes noise so they're sending someone else out yet again.

I will have to say, though, that they've seemed to have put some training or new processes in place as my last few calls with them have been much better than my previous calls.

I have had this happen to me three times, same refrigerator, upper & lower sides. It was the compressor the first two times and the computer board (supposedly) the third time. Now it does not cool at all. We are two for two with LG. Anyone who tells you that LG is a great refrigerator is a lier! Do your research first. Check out Complaints at the Better Business Burea. I have a $3800 paperweight that’s less than 3 years old. I spent over $1,400 to repair it and it still doesn’t work. I’ll never buy another LG product!!

I went the same route and ended up the same way, DO NOT WASTE ANOTHER DIME ON THIS POS!!! You will NEVER get it going, at least for long. Sell it for parts for $50 like I did, or give it away and move on. Not worth

any more headache. You've been had, phlocked as it were. Same as me.

Stephanie Oliver, there’s a chance that there is a leak in the sealed system. There too many things that will cause a refrigerator not to cool, it makes it impossible to diagnose without being at the unit. But if I went on a job and the same issue as yours, I’d be looking for signs of oil near the compressor or condenser. If there’s oil then there’s a refrigerant leak. I’d also check for frost building up inside the freezer on back wall or the freach food section too. Also, do you hear the fan/s inside the unit and one fan by the compressor. Are the coils underneath dirty?
