Just wanted to chime in here and say that Microsoft has made this very difficult for a professional to do and all but impossible for the DIY user. Especially if your old hard drive is faulty and you can't get the files off of it.

In general (IMO) if the hard drive in your Xbox One goes out you might as well either send it to Microsoft or just go buy a new one.

Take a look at IGN's full review of the PS4, they actually replace their hard drive with a 1TB unit and there is even a video showing you how to do it.

Here is the link http://uk.ign.com/articles/2013/11/13/pl...

Cheers.

From the initial look, it looks like it will be easier to replace the PS4 HHD. But that doens't mean that either system will recognize the new HHD.

Microsoft claims that hard drive is non-replaceable but there is a teardown method on this site that shows that it is more replaceable than they claimed. However, it require the user open the console completely which voids the warranty and I'm sure that the console won't work correctly if it is replaced so I wouldn't take any chances trying to do so. PS4's hard drive replacement is a lot more user friendly. All you have to is slide out the shiny black part on top of the PS4 and unscrew a couple of screws and slide the old hard drive out. Also, be sure to have the new PS4 firmware on a flash drive to load into the console so that it will work as soon as you reboot it. This process takes about 5 minutes depending on internet speed. Hope this helps.

Too be blunt and to the point here are the facts with some speculation. (speculation "*")

Xbox one:

1: Drive is not as simple to remove compared to the PS4.

2: Drive may have a proprietary file system*

3: Removing the drive will void warranty.

PS4:

1: Drive is simple to remove and replace, Only 1 screw needs removing.

a: Can be upgraded to whatever size you desire

b: supports SSD (slight improved loading times)

2: No proprietary file system, Just P&P

3: Will not void warranty

hope this clears things up.

happy holidays and happy gaming
