Camera gets Err 30 message. How do I fix it?

I get an Err 30 while taking photos. I can shoot 100 or more photos, then Err 30 starts popping up every few tries. I take out the battery, replace it and restart. Usually camera will work for 10-100 more photos.

I got this error after my camera fell in fresh water. I dried it for several weeks before switch it on for the first time. I spent some more weeks with no success. I read that maybe using a different battery could work and voilá!!! I just bought a non Canon Battery and camera is working with no problem.

I sent my camera to Canon and they said that I should buy a new one. Should I sue them?

Solución Elegida

Problem has gone away. I blew out the camera with a can of compressed air for cleaning PCs. I am planning on sending camera to Canon for a thorough cleaning and recon. Have a MK II ordered.

I had the constant error code. I tried everything. I decided to order a replacement shutter on eBay. Didnt need it after I opened the back case of the camera, I spotted a small ion battery attached to the main board...took it out. Put the main battery back in, cycled through the on and off switch, put the small battery back in place and BAM straight to the setup screen. I wouldn't recommend this if you don't have technical skills or the tiny screw driver it takes to get those pita screws out. Cheers!

Hi Dave, Error 30 is a problem with the shutter, there might be a few things causing it, but it is most likely failing. This won't be a cheap solution, to replace the shutter the camera has to be stripped down completely and go through a full calibration process (Sensor placement and AF). this is time consuming but your camera will be like new after, with a shutter count of 0!

Working solution: Go to Menu and select the Clean Sensor Manually. It really worked for me!

This problem has just manifested itself on one of my 7D's.

Every 2 to 3 shots it was coming up!

I just tried this and touch wood it seems to have worked at the moment. Only time will tell!

I just had this problem.

Your shutter is failing, and will eventually stop working altogether.

I had to send my camera body to Canon for them to replace it.

Not an inexpensive repair, but it is a GREAT camera well worth repairing.

Hi Dave,

Take a look at this thread. It seems that your shutter got stuck.

As the comment from Jimmy_Schaefer shows, there is also a way of solving the problem without hitting the camera.

What about for the EOS 1100D, with err 30?

I fixed this. just take the lens off, manually move the shutter up and out of the way. Look to see if there is anything blocking the path of the shutter (behind the shutter) (I found a little piece of something that was blocking my shutter... I removed it and voila, the camera works again.

has the issue reoccurred?

No reoccurrence, I assume a little piece of material got in there when I dropped the camera or something like that..

I bought a EOS50D in 2009 and recently, maybe about 6 months, she started with this error 30. When this error appears I turn off and turn on the machine and it solves the problem. As I have already taken more than 50,000 photos with this Canon, I believe that this problem is acceptable and even expected.

I had the same issue with my 1100D. I tried all the solutions mentioned in various forums. One of which was the manual cleaning of the sensor. And that is when I noticed that the shutter curtain was stuck and did not expose the sensor at all. The only options I had were to take my camera to dor repair, where I would have been made to pay whatever amount. Or try the repair myself. I opted for latter. I searched for youtube videos on how to disassemble the camera and operate the shutter curtain manually (there is a motor and gear assembly that you can turn or rotate with your thumb). I noticed the curtain would not open still. A closer look revealed a small rubber piece stuck on the upper edge of the curtain. After removing it with a pair of tweezers the shutter curtain started to operate again. Now I again have a working camera and two offspring screws which were left behind and I absolute can't remember which part were they securing. Well, those have carefully stored just in case I remember where they originally came from.

I also have the same problem with my 5d mark iii error 30 keeps popping out even if I replace the battery. So I removed the lens and raised the camera mirror up, I found that the sensor cover was squeezed. I straightened it. Buh the upper one is not as tight as it was. So every 3-4 clicks then error pops out again..

i had a similar issue on canon 1300D .. I tried replacing the battery. it did not work. I took it to a repair guy in Bangalore .. it cost me 5950 rupees to change the sensor, which is quite expensive.
