Why is my phone screen black after water damage?

I accidentally dropped my phone in a sink full of water. I took the phone out right away, took the back off, and put it in rice. I took it out a few times after that to check it and when I did it still turned on and worked. However, at one point when I took it out the screen flickered and turned black. I put the phone back in rice for 24 hours and took it out a day later. When I tried turning it on it turned on, but the screen is still black and I can't see anything. Is there anything I can do to do fix this?

Solución Elegida

Jess, the very first thing you want to do is to no longer try to turn your phone on. The second thing you want to do is to clean your phone. If you do not clean it properly, you are running risk of having corrosion damage in the near future. Disassemble your phone completely and clean everything, especially the logic board, connectors and cable ends with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol. Use a soft brush to gently clean every "nook and cranny". Check your board for any missing or burned components. After that replace the battery. Re-assemble your phone and re-evaluate. Rice will not prevent corrosion nor repair your phone. If you still have a totally blank screen after that, it is possible that it is A: a bad LCD backlight (replace the LCD) or B: a short on the circuitry on the logic board. Let us know what you find. Hope this helps, good luck.

What brush do you suppose to use with this, I know if its to hard there's a risk off knocking off components, to soft wont do, so do you have a recommended brush or will a old toothbrush due???

sounds like the phone is dead, it is possible that the cable that is connected to the screen came loose so check that but otherwise sorry.

My Xperia is water damaged worked after a week of drying out nearly a year later screen has gone blank but can see back light and hear screen responding to touch. Any ideas if I can fix it and is it worth replacing screen?

- de

It's possible then that the backlight is dead, replacing the LCD should fix this. Otherwise it could be that the connection itself is dead in which case you would likely need to replace the logic board.

same thing happened with my phone its working but the screen is black will putting it in rice help?

Hi @ Who Are We,

Rice does not fix anything

rice-is-for-dinner-not-repair

The phone will have to be opened and the problem diagnosed as to what the best repair option is.

If it was subjected to water see the Chosen Solution above.

I experience this one today. I use my phone on taking photos while I'm in the pool. At first, the phone only detected that there is a moisture inside my port. Until I decided to used a hair blower to get rid of it. And then, there is no longer notification. Afterwards, I charged my phone. A few minutes later, an indication of moisture detected. And so I detached the my phone to charging cable. Then, I use my phone to take photos again.

But then, when I turned it on, there is a sign of damaged lines like there is a darker lines and normal lines. And I thought this won't last. Then, I took pictures only in front camera since there is a sign of moisture inside the back camera. And so this suddenly happens..

After taking photos, I do edit pictures through phone. And suddenly, with a 26% battery, my phone blacks out. ??..I started to panic since I've tried all the solutions I have searched in the internet.

And I finally, decided to open the phone trying to fix it myself since I can't afford to pay repair for this in the service center. I found some areas wet. And I tried to open it using the Power On + Volume down. But still nothing works after cleaning. (I didn't do unscrew anything).

The last thing I did today was use an UV sanitizer that I bought in the midst of pandemic. I only put the phone that I opened at the back in the UV Sanitizer (for about 10-15s) and I use the solution I found on making it open ( Power On + Volume up for a 10s). And viola my phone is now working. I am so happy that I want to share to everyone what I did to fix my phone (S10e). Hope it works for you also. I think UV devices can help dry the moisture inside the phone. Feedback me at alleyiahshyne@gmail.com

I really want to fix my s10E this way. but I think I need the replacement LCD and/or battery. It was in water like 30 minutes, but vibrates occasionally. cell repair guy says $300. I don't know where to buy parts myself. In Queens. When I try android file transfer, it doesn't seem to work.

I have an 11 pro max and one day I was outside and it was drizzling so i put my phone under then tent on the table then I went to go jump on the trampoline after I went in the house then i forgot my phone was out there so then I went out there to get it then it was on but the screen was black. Like i could hear the notifications vibrating but the screen was black so idek what it is it might be the battery. my front camera is broke and my back of the phone is cracked but not the back camera

Samari, the advice to replace the battery is because when there's liquid damage inside a phone you have to assume the battery is no longer good because it's the first thing that fails when exposed to water. Given the cracks in your phone you have to assume water got into the phone so follow @oldturkey03's advice to disassemble the phone and clean it. Replace the battery to be safe, then reevaluate.

If the screen still doesn't come on, then you'll most likely have to replace it, since the display is the second most likely thing to fail after being exposed to water.
