Although its early days for this model, I'd like to know where the hard drive is situated within the casing. This is so that I can feel for any overheating and future removal and replacement.

Hi Trev,
There are several teardowns provided here on iFixit. I am not sure what model you are talking about. Here is a tear down of a iMac Intel 27" EMC 2309 and 2374.
However, for a general overview of the different iMacs with a 27" screen, look here. From there, click on the particular model you wish to know more about and look under "H" and "Hard Drive". By following that guide, you will find out about the position of the hard drive.
