Why isn't my beater bar spinning?

The beater bar isn't spinning, the belt seems fine, the suction is good. The filters have been cleaned. I've had the vacuum for about 5 years and never had an issue until now. It also doesn't want to stand upright--but this could be an unrelated issue.

" It also doesn't want to stand upright "In my case the DC14 works fine but will not stand up on its own,.which makes it difficult when using the hose attachment. Please advise

- de

The belt is still tight but will not turn when on.

- de

Mine will spin for 30 secs then stops, I turn it on and it keeps doing the same.

he most common reason why the brush roll on a Dyson DC14 Animal (2004) is not spinning is that the belt has become loose or has broken. The belt can be accessed by removing the soleplate from the vacuum. Once the belt has been checked and replaced (if necessary), the brush roll should start spinning.

Hi @junie

What model is your vacuum cleaner? Did you buy it using a credit card? If so can you find the purchase on the credit card statement?

Update (03/24/2016)

Hi @junie

If you are using the motorhead attachment, have you pulled the bristle control to the out position (in other words not pushed in? It only comes out about a 1/4". Seen in the image, in between the bristle holder and the wheels.

Your beater bar is not moving because the gear that it's belt sits on is full of hair, threads etc.

Unplug the vacuum.

Remove the beater bar cover using a large coin.

Remove the beater bar. This will take some patience and time.

Remove the belt.

The gear should have hair strands etc. wound around it.

Remove the hair etc.

Replace the belt.

Replace the beater bar.

Replace the beater bar cover.

Plug in the vacuum.

Thouroughly clean your carpet as it hasn't been cleaned well the last few times do to the vacuum not working properly.

The DC14 has a clutch that engages or dis-engages the beater bar depending on floor type. You may need to replace the clutch. There are Utube videos that show how to do this. You can order the replacement parts online. Also videos on changing belts, etc.

Thanks so much for posting this!!! I've been trying to find a fix for a while and this was exactly my issue. The hair and debris had worked itself so far into the axel it was completely unobservable until taking off the cog that moves the brush. And because there was so much of it getting that piece off was actually quite difficult. At any rate, after removing the dense bunch of debris it is working perfectly now.

- de

I changed the clutch in my DC14 and the beater brush still doesn't turn, any suggestions?

- de

I've got a brand new beater bar on mine and the belts tight but Still not spinning.

- de

Did all of the above: cleaned the bar, cleared the belt, aligned the pieces holding the bar in the housing were the right way... all good

Looked at the clutch belt.... it’s not “floppy” but I can move the clutch-motor belt by hand, it seems a little loose?

How loose would the clutch-motor belt need to be enough in order to stop the agitator bar from turning at all??? Any ideas ???

I've never had any first hand experience with the Dyson DC14, but this DysonMedic post and this other post might help steer you in the right direction. Good luck!

The first thing is to remove anything that's wrapped around the beater bar. You probably did this already.

Next take off the cover and look at the end caps on the beater bar. On my DC14, the end farthest from the belt tends to gather lint under the end cap. Use a tiny screwdriver or the pointy end of a nail file to dig out the lint. You may be surprised how much accumulates in that small space. Rotate the bar while doing this. The gap is larger at one spot in rotation, and it will be easier to dig out the lint at this spot.

Once all the lint is out, check that the beater bar rotates freely. Put the cover back on and you're set.

This would make a lot more sense with pictures. I hope you're able to figure out what I mean.

There's a YouTube video that shows this in detail. Look for "dyson dc14 brush stuck".

Just to add my own contribution to this thread, I just finished fixing my daughter-in-law's DC14 with a brush that barely turned and touching virtually anything would stop it.

After disassembling the brush, it was very apparent that the belt going from the motor to the clutch was very worn and stretched and wasn't able to transfer power from the motor to the clutch. The clutch itself was fine, so I ordered a pair of belts from Amazon; the belts were $6.50 USD vs. about $40 for an entire clutch assembly.

And since there wasn't a decent iFixit-style guide that I could find, I watched enough YouTube videos to get the hang of it, and wrote my own. It turned into one guide for replacing the entire clutch assembly and another to continue on and replace the belts in the clutch assembly, which didn't turn out to be quite as bad of a job as some comments and articles made it out to be.

I had a similar issue with my vacuum a while back. Even though the belt seemed okay and the suction was working, the beater bar refused to spin.

It turned out the gear the belt sits on was entangled with hair and threads. I unplugged the vacuum, opened the beater bar cover, and removed the bar and belt.

After clearing the debris from the gear, I reassembled everything, and voila! The beater bar started spinning again.

As for the standing issue, it might be separate, but always worth checking if there's any wear on the vacuum's base or locking mechanism.

Here is how you can rid of this problem more better way.

I took the beater bar partway out and pulled away threads. The belt seemed fine also. I put all parts back on and voila! It was working. My guess is I may have been a little rough when vacuuming and jarred the bar out of place.

My wife got some table cloth jammed in the brush bar.

When pulled out suction ok but no brush bar rotation.

No hair or thread on bar to impede rotation

Followed these intructions see URL below, to remove brush bar.

Brush bar drive shaft seemed a little stiff and after a few rotations by hand seemed better.

Replaced brush bar and immediately worked.

Not sure what the diagnosis was ? drive shaft jammed ? some kind of protective jam.

Worth trying this simple routine before trying more complicated dismantle !!

@derekmullins Outside of opening and closing the cap at the top of the wand, I don't believe there's any kind of adjustment available for the amount of suction. If your suction isn't what it should be, my first guess would be that there's either some kind of blockage in the hoses or a loose connection is letting air in where it shouldn't. Here are a couple of the suggestions from Dyson on troubleshooting, straight from the Dyson DC14 User Guide.

Dyson DC14 Owner's manual

Problem / Potential solution

Less than normal or no pickup
• If vacuuming non-delicate carpeting, ensure brush control is set on carpets mode.
from cleaner head or Note: brushbar will only spin when the handle is reclined.
Machine turns off in use
• Remove and check washable filter to see if it is clean (filter should be blue in
color). Wash filter if necessary as shown on page 7.
• If you removed the soleplate, it must be refitted flush with the cleaner head. If it is
not, refit soleplate as shown on page 12 and re-check performance.
• Be sure the filter housing, U-bend, and airway inspection valve are snapped in
securely and confirm there are no blockages.

Less than normal or no suction
• Confirm the U-bend is in place and that there are no blockages.
from wand or hose
• Remove the wand and check for blockages.
• Confirm the hose has no blockages or holes by stretching it out.
• Be sure the filter housing and airway inspection valve are snapped in securely and
confirm there are no blockages.
• Remove and check washable filter to see if it is clean (filter should be blue in
color). Wash filter if necessary as shown on page 7.

@dadibrokeit

thanks this is very helpful but it says there's say thing to increase and decrease suction on your Dyson DC 14 animal

- de

@derekmullins I've been through as many DC14 owner's manuals as I can find including ones that specifically say they're for the DC14 Animal and none of them say anything about adjusting the suction.

What exactly are you trying to do with the suction? Is it too strong or too weak?

- de

@dadibrokeit

well i was just wanting to know how to do it for more suction can you insert a image for it?

- de

@derekmullins The only information I currently have is that as far as I can tell, the suction is not adjustable. If you have something to the contrary, please show us. Otherwise the only suggestion I have is to go through some of the troubleshooting steps and try to find out why the suction isn't what it should be.

And I have no idea what kind of image you're asking for.
