My keyboard stopped working twice

Why?

My Penryn is about 15 months old. I use it for around 12-16 hours a day. Both times the keyboard quit, the temp (istat nano) was ~61 C. After taking out the battery and letting the thing cool down, the keyboard starting working again.

It hasn't malfunctioned since, but I'm curious why it would stop working from simply getting warm. It's been hotter than that many times before. Is it simply over-use?

Not yet. It's still under warranty, so I'll hand it over. That pains me though. Last time I checked with the Apple store they didn't have anyone on site that was qualified to repair them. I'd have to be without my comp for at least a week. I know I fix most anything that's wrong with it, but I don't want to void the warranty in case something really horrible happens. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and let them fix it.

This would be my best guess as well. It might be worth while to follow MacBook Core 2 Duo Lower Case Replacement and see if everything is snug. 60C is pretty hot though, so you might want to look into that as well.

Back Up Your Data

You can clone the entire drive to an external drive before giving your MacBook to Apple. That way when you get the repaired (or replaced) device back you can quickly restore data. In your case this seems the easiest thing to do.

I question how useful the warranty thing is, though. I've seen other people exchange laptops under warranty and it always turns out to be most inconvenient for them. Computer warranties are useless unless you get an immediate replacement device and restoration of your data, if and where possible.

it still being under warranty, have it fixed! No reason to fiddle yourself and have it break down completely just when the warranty has run out - you really don't want that.
