Fan comes on when viewing web video or flash

When viewing video online, say YouTube or playing Mafia Wars on Facebook, the fan will come on and rev up very high. Stop and the fan will eventually turn off.

This isn't a recent thing, has been happening forever. Replaced the battery not so long ago and that didn't make a difference. The only mod make to this laptop was upgrading the wireless card to a N card.

I'm pretty sure it is flash, Shane. Just because taking out your battery changed the situation doesn't mean that flash is not the cause. I would suspect that the fans don't kick in when you don't have the battery in because:

  1. the battery produces heat
  2. the place where the battery should be may allow for more cooling and ventilation.

If you want to keep this from happening, maybe you should check out Click to Flash, which blocks flash unless you say otherwise. This may help preserve your battery life as well.

Flash is VERY cpu intesive. That is why the fans kick in on YouTube and other flash sites

Hey, my wife's laptop is about 3 yrs old, and her fan spun up and down constantly, so I removed the cover over the heatsink processor assembly, the entrance to the CPU cooling shroud from the fan was full of dustbunnies, and also I removed the heatsink from the processor and the thermal material was all dried out so I cleaned the processor and heatsink and applied thermal silicon and reassembled, and the fan hardly ever spins up. It is moving, but since everything is thermally efficient again there is no need for high speed fan operation. I would check for dust bunnies in there at least. Probably only need to take off the keyboard to see the thermal assembly.

bit of an update to this.

looking at activity monitor the fans are coming on when there high cpu usage, but the usage varies by browser. A good example is the homepage of Plex, www.plexapp.com. Nothing fancy about this page but it will cause the cpu to max and thus the fans:

FireFox - 100% cpu and max fans

Safari - 60% cpu - quietest

Chrome - 15% cpu although there in another process called Google Helper that runs at 95% - max fans

In fact, the same page wil cause high cpu load on my iMac, but the fans won't come on.

actually its not flash at all.

If I take the battery out and visit the same pages, the fan doesn't ramp up. It isn't the battery though as I've had it checked by Apple, plus we've tried various batteries and power supplies.

Bottom line is, if the battery is on and you visit a site with flash or video, fans will ramp up to 6200 rpm. Take the battery out with just the power supply whilst still on the same page and fan will go right down.

its not just flash sites that causes it. It can't be a heat thing with the batteries because the ones we have tried have been stone cold and within seconds of plugging one it, the fans ramps up. It will also do the same thing if starting the laptop from cold, i.e. left off overnight.

Just so you know, the fan will kick on in any Mac once the CPU hits a certain percent usage (if memory serves me correctly, it's 70%). So it doesn't necessarily matter how hot your computer is or how long you've been using it for the fan to turn on.

The GPU graphics processor unit is the most heat producing element in

a computer. When You are accesing videos, or any kind of graphics

this processor (GPU) will be working hard enough to produce sufficient heat to activate the fan to compensate for the excesive heat produced.

It happens more in one computer than in others and it depends on the quality or capacity of this processor unit in your computer.

Your statement about the GPU being used for "any kind of graphics" is flawed - browser plugins like Flash and Silverlight are CPU-bound - they use the CPU to do their work, which is why they are so abysmally bad. If the GPU were used, much less energy would be used because the GPU is optimized for such things, and the CPU is not.

Flash will make the fans run high since its going to use more CPU. HTML5 however does not have this effect.

This is somewhat normal, but it depends on the environment and surroundings, as well as the rest of the computer (what you are running).

I would recommend that you change the buffer of YouTube, you can do this by right clicking on a Flash video and selecting "Settings". Then deselect "Enable Hardware Acceleration" on the first tab, and set the third tab scroll bar to 10MB.

The bottom line is that flash is very, very demanding. Hopefully those settings help a bit though.
