Background Information
The Boston Dynamics Spot Arm is a modular robotic arm designed to extend the capabilities of the Boston Dynamics Spot robot dog by enabling it to physically interact with its environment. Mounted on the front payload port, the arm provides six degrees of freedom plus a gripper, allowing Spot to grasp, lift, carry, place, and drag objects while navigating complex terrain.
The arm can reach nearly one meter in extension and lift up to 11 kg, with a drag capacity of approximately 25 kg, enabling tasks such as opening doors, turning valves, flipping switches, and manipulating tools or equipment. An integrated gripper includes a 4K RGB camera, time-of-flight depth sensor, IMU, and LED illumination, which allow the robot to inspect objects and guide manipulation tasks.
Through the Spot software stack and developer APIs, the arm can be controlled via teleoperation, high-level commands, or custom applications, supporting both joint-space and end-effector control for autonomous or semi-autonomous robotic manipulation in industrial, research, and hazardous environments.
