Core Technical Specifications
The original Command series is largely categorized by its orientation: CH (Command Horizontal) and CV (Command Vertical). These engines are typically found in older high-end garden tractors and industrial equipment.
- Valvetrain: Features an Overhead Valve (OHV) design. Crucially, most V-twin and many single-cylinder Command engines utilize hydraulic valve lifters, which automatically adjust to maintain zero lash, eliminating the need for periodic valve clearance adjustments.
- Lubrication: Unlike consumer "splash" systems, the Command series uses a full-pressure lubrication system with a high-efficiency automotive-style spin-on oil filter, ensuring consistent oil flow to critical bearings even on slopes.
- Bore & Sleeve: Constructed with an aluminum block and cast-iron cylinder liners, providing a durable wear surface that can be rebuilt—a key differentiator from cheaper "throw-away" residential engines.
- Ignition: Uses a reliable electronic magneto ignition (specifically the Capacitive Discharge Ignition or CDI) that ensures a strong spark even at low cranking speeds for easier starting.
