Background
The ASUS ROG STRIX GL702 is a mid to high-end gaming laptop designed for gamers as a powerful portable device with relative hardware to a desktop PC. Released in 2016 by ASUS’s Republic of Gamers, the GL702 was a part of the early wave of laptops that bridged the gap between portable devices and desktop PC hardware capabilities. It serves as the big brother of the existing ASUS GL502, which shared the same design but contained lower-end hardware. The GL702 has many different configurations, all at different price points, with the most notable ones containing either core i7-i5 processors including a GTX 1060/1070. With mid/high-range specs, the laptop was designed to comfortably run the latest hardware-demanding tasks such as video games and video rendering.
The Gl702 was manufactured in Taiwan/China and distributed to major retailers worldwide such as Amazon or BestBuy. Prices ranged between $1200-$1800 USD on select models, however, the laptop is currently discontinued from production due to its lack of modern relevancy and outdated design. Although retail stores no longer carry stock of this item, replacement parts such as new batteries or chargers are still carried and distributed.
Due to GL702’s small size, it struggles to handle its powerful components and has poor thermal performance. Despite integrating a triple cooling system, overheating, thermal throttling, and loud fan noise were common consumer complaints. Other common problems included battery and keyboard degradation after extended use.
Identification
To identify your GL702 model look for a white sticker on the bottom of the laptop that contains the model number. The screen can be 17.3/15 inches big depending on the model, and comes in black or metallic grey color variants with orange or red accents. The right side of the GL702 includes three USB 3.0 ports, one USB 3.1, a memory card reader, and a Kensington security slot. The left side has a Mini DisplayPort, an HDMI port, a USB-C port, one USB3.0 port, and an ethernet port. The back has a GL702 the ASUS logo in the middle with orange stripes on the sides.
